Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello everyone,
Been having a rummage around on MSN this afternoon looking for Cat*ley entries and have come across something interesting (well I think so!) and it concerns a Cattley who is listed on the North Carolina:- Civil War Soldiers Index.
This shows that one E.E.Cattley served with the 55th Regiment North Carolina Infantry.
No more than that at this stage but it poses some interesting questions. Certainly this person is not of my Tree and none other that I know of. I think I am correct in saying that all immigrations by Cattleys into the USA had seen them remain in what was at that time "The Union" ie the Northern States rather than the Confederacy.
Logic says therefore that E.E.C. was possibly of an older family (in American terms) who had been there for a number of generations who's ancestors may have entered America via Virginia or even further south. So who was he and when did his family go to America?
You will recall that I wrote a week or so ago about an American Negro family in Ohio who have the name Catley. The story they have is that their ancestor at the time of being freed from slavery changed their name from that of their previous white owner. This mans name was, so the story goes, Catlin. Possible? certainly but why Catley? What if however the mans name was Cattley, maybe by dropping a "t" this slave felt that the name had been sufficiently altered?.
Any input of ideas or facts much appreciated
Regards ................... Tim
Hi Everyone,
I have just installed the latest version of the Catley Database which
now contains 60 new records gleaned from the list since May 2003.
Best wishes

Thanks for confirming that Steve is your son. I thought he must be but one
never knows until one checks things out.
It is good to see from Ericas rootsweb net just how many people are involved
in researching their Cat*ley ancestory and it really heartens me. Maybe we
will be able to "fit together" some of those currently seperate lines soon.
Regards ............... Tim

Good luck with your searches in Beverly next week Dave. Small world is it
not because I too am in Beverly on 21st+22nd this month. Not researching but
testing Fire Engines for handling at high speed on the Leconfield MOD base
runways there..
Interestingly, one of those other six Cattley Trees that exist, those to
which I refered in an earlier e-mail on this rootsweb net a couple of months
ago live in the Beverly area.
Do be sure to let us all know how you get on won't you?
Best wishes ............... Tim

Dear Alan,
Do you have a son Steve?
I ask because browsing through MSN the other day, I came across a report
concerning the 18th Annual Go Wireless Fall Classic half Marathon 2001.
It indicated that a Steve Cattley of Abbotsford was a finisher in this race.
Logic tells me that with the death of R.E.D.Cattley some years ago now and
knowing as I do, that his son and grandson live in Australia, that the
probable link of an "unknown Cattley" in BC must surely rest with you?
Can you confirm for me please?
Regards ............ Tim

Hello Dave,
Ah well, from your logical question, there we have it in a nutshell, why on
earth did they seemingly migrate from deepest rural Cambridgeshire right out
in the country to a Town up in the North Eastern part of England facing the
North Sea?
From probably an agricultural upbringing to possibly a fishing Industry?
Who knows what the motives were but possibly the question will spur you on
to find the answer? I hope so!

Liz,
This is what I know about the flu epidemic of 1918 for what it is worth:-
It is estimated that over a billion people world wide caught it and of
those, some 21.5 million died. Commonly known as "Spanish Flu" although
there is no real evidence to suggest that Spain was its point of origin,
other than it gained its first real publicity from Reuters cables from
Madrid on the 4th June 1918 that a strange form of disease of epidemic
character had appeared in the Spanish capital.
The first known outbreak of this flu virus happened at Camp Funston Army
Base in Kansas USA in March of that year and it is generally considered that
it was American troops that probably bought the virus over. However not only
the USA and Europe were affected and it also spread to Asia where in India
alone it is estimated that 12.5 million out of the Worlds 21.5 million
deaths occured there. The USA deaths are estimated to be 500,000 with
Washington DC experiancing 3,500 deaths alone.
Russia ......450,000
Britain 229,000
Germany 225,000
France 166,000.
The first wave of infections really took hold in the World population during
June,July and slowly subsided only to break out again (in Europe, not sure
about elsewhere) in October, however it continued well into Febuary 1919.
We have a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone here in my village
church yard to mark the grave of a young English nurse who for much of 1917
and right upto the armistace in November 1918, served on the western front
in field hospitals. She returned home from the war only to die of flu in
December that year.
Regards Tim C.

Note that most of the 19th century Weaverham Catleys were descended from
Joseph and Sarah [nee Parnell] Catley who were both born in London.
Joseph appears to have been one of the following:
Joseph CATLEY, son of William & Susannah, baptised on 2 Jun 1793 at St.
Mary, Whitechapel
or
Joseph CATTLEY, son of John & Margaret Catherine baptised on 21 Jul 1793
at St. Matthew, Bethnal Green, [born 13 July 1793, father a baker]
My money is on the former [the son of William and Susannah], but I have
only very circumstantial evidence!
The later, cricketing, Catleys of Weaverham didn't appear until the
1890s and appear to belong to a different family.

Kay,
Please do not jump to conclusions due to the number of e-mails floating
around about Cat*leys located in other counties than Yorkshire that the main
concentration was elsewhere.
There is a BIG concentration of Cat*leys in both northern Counties of
Yorkshire and Lancashire and some roots are known to go back to 1590.
No doubt, as other researchers bring up information, a better picture will
develop but it is reasonably certain from what we know so far that the
Cat*leys in the north were located in the parishes and villages between the
now Cities of Leeds and York, where did they come from before that you ask?
That is a question that we would ALL like to know! Cast your mind back a
few months to the e-mails concerning the origins of the place name Catley =
"Wild Cat Wood" in Old English and the references to the Gilbertine Order
and the Monastic settlement of Catthley founded in 1143 in Lincolnshire.
We can speculate as much as we like re origins but for my money the answer
must be that a number of country dwellers in separate parts of the now UK
took up the "Wild Cat Wood" title as a Sir Name.
Tim.

Dear Kay,
As I said in an earlier e-mail, it was my intention to name the various
Cat*ley trees by their early areas of known origin as this makes for easy
identification.
Thus to identify one specific tree that is known to have resided in the
County of Hertfordshire since at least the very early 1700's in the small
villages (not Towns Erica) of Barley,Barkway and Ansty, it seemed reasonable
to call them "The Ansty Cat*leys". In fact this title is quite apt anyway
because over the years I have met or corresponded with quite a few members
of this pedigree and they call themselves The Ansty Catleys. If it is good
enough for them, its good enough for me.
By the same token, I have you as researching John Catley of Leeds and Chris
Newall, Joseph and Sarah Catley of Weaverham and so on through the whole
list of those who are on Ericas Cat*ley rootsweb. One could then talk
about the Weaverham Catleys which would be specifically those who Chris is
researching. However, as there are AT LEAST THREE different Cat*ley family
trees who have had ancestors who resided in Leeds it would be confusing to
simply call your ancestors "The Leeds Catleys"
Regards, Tim

Hi Kay,
No its not FreeBMD. I'm using 1837online. As I'm stuck at the moment going
back I thought I would go forwards. So all the Catley's on 1837online I am
saving to disc and then putting them in Excel to get a better look at
things. I have found quite a few births and marriages for my step dads
family. If you want me to do a look up and I have completed the year let me
know.

Hi folks
The Ainstey in Yorkshire is an area around the City of York which was not part of the three Ridings (or thirdings) of the county. I do not know what the word means. the Ainstey is no longer a civil administrative area. Bilton Ainstey means Bilton in the Ainstey.
As for the grouping of Cat(t)leys around Ansty ,Barkway & Royston in HERTS I reckon that it also covers the adjacent area in Cambridgeshire with Cattleys at Thriplow and Melbourn in the Mid 18thC.
I havent discovered my Catleys yet. For me its just a family middlename from Gainsborough LINCS 1823 but I'm looking also at Bridlington london and the Ansty area to find a link.

Hi Kay,
There are NO silly questions Kay !
Let me try to expand upon Tim's geography lesson of the other
day. Firstly, there are many places with similar names in England - a real
trap for the unwary. These days that is becoming a global problem. My
mail - with postcode WA - has before now, been sent to Washington, USA, and
people use SA for both South Africa and South Australia. See at the end
Kay for Ansty, Anstey & Bilton Ainsty.
To us here in Australia it is very difficult to imagine the relationship
between counties in England. I live in Western Australia - a state so
large that England and Scotland would fit into it a number of times. In
terms of the size of Australia, consider that Perth to Sydney is further
than London to Moscow; something I had no concept of before I came to live
here <grin>. Perth is said to be the most isolated city of it's size in
the world, and by English standards, we travel huge distances to get
anywhere. This only goes to show that everything is relative. People
managed to get to gold--rush towns like Kalgoorlie some 600 km (375 miles)
from anywhere with little or no water or supplies available on route. In
Victoria, Ballarat is an easy afternoon's drive from Melbourne in rather
gentler if hilly country, but I would not have fancied the walk or even
cart-ride there !!
So back to England. Anstey/Barkway/Barley and Royston are a small group
of towns in a tiny county North of London. The four villages form a circle
with each village about 2 miles (~3+km) from the next. Using that as a
central point, the distance to Marcham, just south of Oxford, is only about
30-35 miles ( ~50 km) and towns of interest in Essex and Lincolnshire about
the same.
To my way of thinking these "Anstey" families almost form one group,
whereas the Midsomer-Norton (South of Bristol but in or near the Somerset
border - I think), Cheshire and Yorkshire families are not exactly within
easy casual visiting distance of each other. Given the rigours of the day
to day life of miners they quite possibly lost touch with their
grand-parents' families unless they were literate and could correspond.
There are still CATLEYs in Yorkshire within the 40/50 mile area where the
TT CATTLEYs we have in our records lived from 1600. It's bounded roughly
by Wakefield, Leeds, Hull, and a bit North of York. The fact that Hull
was a great centre for trade with the Baltic in the 18th Century was very
fortunate for many families in that area, several of ours included - with
the various spellings. Hull (or Kingston upon Hull to give it it's full
name) on the Northern bank of the River Humber was in the East Riding of
Yorkshire. If you punt across the river, or go over the Humber Bridge,
you enter Lincolnshire. There are Cat*leys on both sides of the
river, so the division of the families into different counties CAN be just
in our imaginations.
I have found the same scale in my Gloucestershire research - my research
family there had the temerity to move to nearby villages in neighbouring
counties. When you consider though, that there is a marker stone in
Moreton-in-March that marks the intersection point (some years ago now)
between Gloustershire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire, it
does get confusing. It is still the intersection of three counties - the
Worcs boundary having been moved further North.
I know that today in England nothing is measured in distance but rather by
the time it takes to travel from one place to another because of traffic
problems, but I doubt our ancestors with horse transport and relatives
dotted around the locality thought like that. Even today, with our lovely
fast cars and not always fit bodies, as a generalisation, a day's march for
an army in good conditions is reckoned at 22 miles in 8 hours (according to
several army experts of my ken). 15 is an easy march, 30 miles a hard march.
The problem with the English counties for us upside-downers is that in the
first place the British Government keeps changing the boundaries, so that
we struggle to work out which local register office is the relevant
one; and secondly the people on the ground there in the 18th Century
didn't see the line in the ground/river that marked one county off from
another. They just headed off to some place where they had any sort of
friend or relative and if they found work there they stayed if not the
headed off again the next day to the next relation perhaps 10 miles further
on. An easy walk in fine weather and a doddle on a horse.
The end of the 18th Century in England, when many tenant farmers lost their
grazing rights because of the "enclosure act", the way of life of many
people was destroyed, causing them to up sticks and head off to the large
industrial areas where they could get jobs to put food on the table. On
of my AGG lot left Glos/Worcs. where his family had been a farmers for
generations and became a pewterer in Lambeth !
This, Kay, is not gospel, but is based on my research and my reading,
and personal experience of the differences I encountered when I left the
vast skies and horizons of Africa to live in leaffy little Warwickshire,
then came to live in even vaster Western Australia
Here endeth the lesson <grin>............ Erica

Yes - Bilton Ainsty in Yorks - doesn't feature on many modern maps. You
can see a picture of the church here :

Make sure you get both lines - it's a very long address.

Yes, as Ansty, in Warwickshire, W. Sussex and Wilthshire, and another two
spelt Anstey: one in Leicestershire and the one in Hertfordshire (as
discussed as part of the group of four villages above.)

Hi Kay,
No its not FreeBMD. I'm using 1837online. As I'm stuck at the moment going
back I thought I would go forwards. So all the Catley's on 1837online I am
saving to disc and then putting them in Excel to get a better look at
things. I have found quite a few births and marriages for my step dads
family. If you want me to do a look up and I have completed the year let me
know.
