Very interesting. This is the second time this week that I've seen
someone reference Alice THORNTON (Catlett) (Taylor) as Alice CATLETT.
Does the book offer a source showing she's a daughter of John CATLETT
(Jr.)?
My records indicate she's a daughter of Francis "of Fall Hill" THORNTON
and Mary TALIAFERRO (d/o John TALIAFERRO and Sarah SMITH). My
source(s): Stubbs for the father and for the mother, some Thornton
notes I received which are on file at the Napa Valley (CA) Genealogy
Society.
If Alice's lineage is correct via THORNTON, TALIAFERRO, and SMITH, then
she is a cousin to the CATLETTs who descend via the marriages of
Elizabeth and Mary CATLETT to TALIAFERRO brothers (daughters of Col.
John CATLETT's via his second marriage).
Alice THORNTON (Catlett) was married to Lawrence CATLETT (who predeased
his his father). Both father and son died in 1724. Alice CATLETT is
referred to as a daughter-in-law in the will of John CATLETT. Of
course, the term "daughter-in-law" at that time sometimes translates to
"step-daughter." There's apparently no daughter named Alice in John
CATLETT's will. But, if there's a new source out there for us to study,
I'd be tickled pink. <g>
Also note that the identity of Elizabeth GAINES as a wife of John
CATLETT (son of the immigrant) seems to be in doubt per recent article
by Margaret Amundson in "The Virginia Genealogist". I think the current
theory is that Mary GAINES was more likely his wife. Apparently there
is no "Elizabeth" cited in the will of Elizabeth's purported father,
Daniel GAINES.
