Hi Tammy --
You wrote (in part and quoting me):
>I don't see an entry for a CATLETT and CRABTREE marriage. If
no one
else >volunteers (by the weekend), I'll take a look to re-check the
CD's.
THANK YOU! You are so kind. I would appreciate that very much!
I looked again at the files I have stored on my PC and this jogged my
memory somewhat. The large file that I created from the Automated
Archives CD's were for any surname starting with CATL* or CATTL*, which
picked up all kind of variant spellings for CATLETT. There are no
entries matching CRAB* or specifically CRABTREE. I'm sorry.
I went back and checked the only CD that I have that has Claiborne Co.,
TN marriages. This is CD#229 "Marriage Records, Southern States", Vol
1. On that CD is the marriage of Fereby CRABTREE to John ---, 22 Jan
1842; his surname is given as 3 dashes/hyphens. There are other
CRABTREE marriages in that county, all within the same timeframe (give
or take a few years). No CATLETT marriages there. <sigh>
>Are there any other CATLETTs in the counties surrounding Knox
(KY)
and >Claiborne (TN)? Nearby neighbors in the census records?
No nearby neighbors in the census records of Knox Co. KY. In 1830
census of Jessamine Co. KY. there is a John CATLETT. This source came
from 1830 KY Federal Census index at the Cincinnati Public Library.
Since this was just an index I have no idea the age of this John...(my
John would have been the age of 42)...I have no other information on
this John of Jessamine Co. KY.
When I asked about the nearby neighbors, I wasn't very clear. Sorry.
Do you have the names recorded of the nearby neighbors? (The way I
phrased the question implied nearby CATLETT neighbors). Nearby
neighbors near the CATLETT household. Any CRABTREEs nearby? In
determining where your John fits in -- knowing his neighborhood may lead
to his origins. Families often moved from one place to another. It's
not the easiest way to research, but sometimes it's the only method
left.
As for TN., thats where I've been searching for the past month.
So far
I've found a Benjamin, John, Richard and Loftus CATLETT, all found in
Sevier Co. TN. This information was found on the internet, Sevier Co.
TN. web page.
I'm not that familiar with the TN counties (except for a couple). How
close is Sevier to Claiborne? I may know one or two people who were
researching Catletts in that area. I'll have to check some old, old
e-mails -- I'm likely not to have a current e-mail address for them
though. I believe one of the guys is David Lee (goes by Lee) Catlett.
He was in west FL several years ago, but I think he moved up to TN in
1997 about the time I was making a temporary move to FL. You might
check some of the "white pages" sites on the Net to see if you can find
a phone number or address for him. And in the meantime, I'll check my
mail archives for correspondence from him. Another name with CATLETT in
TN interest that comes to mind is Tim Haller (tshaller(a)aol.com).
The Carolinas were the next place I planned to look! Would you know
the counties of NC and Georgia the CATLETT's went to?
Nope, not off hand. I've let Pam Mullenaz know about the list and I
think she can answer questions about them much more easily than I can.
There may be others already here who can, too. I hope they'll speak up.
>Does Fereby have NC roots?
I'm not sure where Fereby is from! Here is how Fereby is listed in the
Knox Co. KY. census'...
1850 Fereby, 34, SC. This is the first census that my Catletts show
up.
1860 Phereby, 45, TN.
1870 Pherabee, 63, NC.
1880 Feribee, 68, SC.
I don't have the 1900 Knox Co. census.
I asked because I have a Phariby Garrett and I've heard that women with
this name hail from a Feribee (and variant spellings) in colonial NC.
But...that's getting off topic. <s>
The children's birth places are mixed also KY., VA., TN. They
have a
different birth place in almost every census.
But John is always listed as born VA.
They have been very difficult to trace because of this!
I certainly understand that.
