Hi Tammy --

I'm afraid my line is one of those broken links in the GREAT
CATLETT
TREE! Here is my line...
John Catlett b. 1788 VA. d.bef.1870 Knox Co. KY.
+ Fereby Barnes Crabtree b. abt 1812/1816
Marriage record from Claiborne Co. TN. reads:
John _____ married Fereby Crabtree January 22, 1842
* I'm assuming this is John Catlett. I have not seen this document
myself yet...but plan to. A nice lady from Claiborne Co. TN. looked
this information up for me.
I took a look at the document I referred to in a post to Tudie. That
document is based on the marriage CD's produced by Automated Archives
and I don't see an entry for a CATLETT and CRABTREE marriage. That of
course doesn't mean much. If no one else volunteers (by the weekend),
I'll take a look then to re-check the CD's. My CD player on this PC
works only when it wants to, so I'll have to fire up the other which
isn't ready for business right now either.
*Also Claiborne Co. TN. is a very short distance from Knox Co. KY.
Many people from Knox Co. KY. went over to Claiborne Co. to get
married.
John and Fereby lived in Fighting Creek, Knox Co. KY. The first record
of them in Knox Co. KY. was 1850.
Children of John and Fereby Catlett,
i. Mahala b.abt.1834
ii. Joshua b. abt.1836
iii. Selina b.abt.1840, d. June 27, 1910 Knox Co. KY.
iv. Louvina b. abt.1844
v. Elizabeth b. abt.1845
vi. Zelpha b. abt.1847
vii. John Franklin b.abt.1849
viii. Loucinda (Lucy) b.May 4, 1851
ix. James Madison b. December 1854*
x. William b.1860
The first two or three children...Mahala, Joshua, Selina, may be
Catlett children, Crabtree children or a "mixture" from both John and
Fereby's previous marriages. All of the children are listed as
CATLETT's in all of the Knox CO. KY. census'.
*Since John was much older than Fereby, I'm assuming he was married at
least once before...would love to find a record of that.
Are there any other CATLETTs in the counties surrounding Knox (KY) and
Claiborne (TN)? Nearby neighbors in the census records?
Based on the 1788 date, I thought I might have a lead on your John
(possibly the son of Reuben and Elizabeth CATLETT of Caroline Co., VA,
whom I'd estimated his birth date as circa 1787. However, in reviewing
the court transactions, he may have been born as early as 1779, as he
participated in a land transaction in 1802, a result of his inheriting
property from his father's estate.
Looking at the names of the children from the census records --
generally, those are not names usally associated with the families
coming out of VA at that time. It's possible that your family is
descended from those who went into the Carolinas or Georgia. I've not
studied those lines, but perhaps someone else on the list has. Does
Fereby have NC roots?
