Hi Debra --
You wrote (in part):
Hello all,
I am brand new to this list and unfortunatly I am unsure of who my
connection is.
I know that there is one. This is sketchy at best but here goes...
My Sarah"Sallie"Garrett b.1809 TN. who married Albert Hurt b.1804 Va.
they married May 14,1828 in Roane,Co.TN. They named their 2nd child
Catlett Gillington
Hurt.
I checked my database have absolutely nothing for HURT.
Catlett is a name that travels even today in this line of Hurt's.
I
haven't as yet found Albert's parent's and siblings, but I think I may
have found a lead with Sarah's. Albert and Sarah lived and raised their
family in Morgan,Co.TN.
There are theese other Garrett's living there in the 1800s...Nancy
Garrett b.1790 SC.(she married Jonathan Dildine), John Garrett b.1804
SC.(he married Elizabeth Hall), Jonathan Garrett b.1805 SC.(he married
an known Elizabeth) and Sarah b.1809 TN.(she married Albert Hurt).
I checked a book I have here that covers a little of the CATLETT-GARRETT
(and WINN and THOMAS) family, but no hits on what you have listed. I
suspect the book is incomplete, as the author was not tracing all
descendants. I don't know if he's still online or not, but you might
try contacting the author. The book and author info:
Frederick Ware Huff
FOUR FAMILIES: WINN, THOMAS, WARE, GARRETT OF THE SOUTHERN UNITED
STATES FROM 1600S TO 1993
1993
Kennesaw, Georgia
I have noticed on familytreemaker that 2 different Elizabeth
Catlett's
had married into the Garrett line. This is where I think Catlett comes
in for me.
Be suspect of the information on the WFT CD's that show the parents of
Elizabeth CATLETT being John CATLETT and Elizabeth GAINES. The
Elizabeth CATLETT who was daughter of John (and possibly a SMITH, not
Elizabeth GAINES) was born 6 Sep 1689. The Elizbeth CATLETT who married
the Edward GARRETT (in 1732) would have been in her late 40's and is
credited with having been the mother of quite a few children with Edward
GARRETT. I'm suspicious of the parentage given for the Elizabeth
CATLETT who married Edward GARRETT. Dr. Huff in his book also shows the
CATLETT-GAINES parents for this Elizabeth CATLETT. My hunch is that
Edward GARRETT's wife was more closely related to the CATLETTs who
already had a presence in the area that would become Fauquier and
Loudoun counties and not the lines that point to the Caroline,
Spotsylvania, and other counties south of Stafford. Just a hunch
though.
The Elizabeth (daughter of John CATLETT and SMITH or GAINES) married
Rowland THORNTON. She was the mother of Francis, Elizabeth, and Alice
THORNTON (all b. between 1721 and 1729). Rowland THORNTON died between
21 Sep 1741 and 5 Mar 1741/2. While it is possible that she could have
remarried someone after THORNTON's death, it doesn't seem likely, as in
her will (written 2 Sep 1748 and proved in King George Co., VA on 5 Sep
1751)she calls herself Elizabeth THORNTON.
But, that's not to say that your CATLETT connection isn't via the
GARRETTs.
There was a Mrs. Fisher (who wrote a book on the Garretts, I believe)
who had an Elizabeth CATLETT (b. 24 Mar 1729, daughter of John CATLETT
and Alice GIBSON) married to a Robert GARRETT. Nothing further on their
descendants via my source (her correspondence to George Harrison Sanford
King in 1955. This same Elizabeth is shown in the Stubbs history of the
Catlett family to have married a Mr. Johnson. And one or the other
(Elizabeth or Johnson) died shortly after thier marriage. The wording
isn't really clear in the book. I interpreted it to mean that Mr.
Johnson had died and that would give credence to the marriage between
Elizabeth and Robert GARRETT.
You might ask these questions, too, over on the GARRETT list, if you
haven't already.
Does anyone know of this Catlett/Garrett connection? Or does anyone
know
of a Patsy Catlett marrying a Reuben Hurt?
Where does this Patsy CATLETT come into play? Not sure she's in my
database, but if you have some approximate dates, I'll see what I might
have.
Wish I have something more definitive for you. Hopefully someone else
will and if not now, perhaps later.
Thanks for posting!
