Then I have Elizabeth FITZHUGH, b. ca. 1740 (d/o [Dr.] William
FITZHUGH
and Martha TALIAFERRO, m. ca. 1765 to William CATLETT (s/o John CATLETT
and Mary GRAYSON). This marriage is according to Stubbs. There is
conflicting information on this William in the Caroline Co. records
indicating he was not married, was declared insane by the courts and his
brother Benjamin (whom was under discussion in a previous message today)
was granted control of William's property. Later the courts granted
Francis BARBEE guardianship of William. This information is discussed
in detail in T.E. Campbell's history of Caroline Co., VA. Abstracts of
this case appear in the Sparacio's books of Caroline Co., VA court
orders. There was a time when I didn't think Campbell's information was
terribly reliable, but after seeing the abstracts I tend to think that
Stubbs gave William a wife and perhaps mixed his identity with that of
another William of that time period.
The data on Eliz. FITZHUGH mar. William CATLETT is apparently on film at the
LDS. However, I have not looked at the film and will do so after the New
Year. If anyone else has that opportunity, it is film No. 1903767 and
2034364.
I also have an Elizabeth TALIAFERRO (dau. of Wm Debnam FITZHUGH and Martha
"Patsy" TALIAFERRO) marrying BATTAILE FITZHUGH. Can we rule her out as
being widowed and re-marrying (i.e., another Elizabeth FITZHUGH)?
