I found an 1846 court case J.B. Wells and wife (Clarisa Catlett) vs. William
Catlett and others. I am puzzled that a record exists because there was
Sevier County, Tennessee court house fire in 1856. I am going to
investigate further to see how this record escaped the fire. The record is
in the Joseph A. Sharp Collection at the McClung Library in Knoxville,
Tennessee.
James B. Wells and his wife Clarisa Catlett filed suit against William
Catlett and others in regards to the terms of the Will of Benjamin Catlett,
decd. Benjamin Catlett died 29th April 1834, and had made his will 30 April
1833.
The suit charged that the Estate was being misused by William Catlett &
others. The "others" turn out to be Nancy Catlett (nee Loveday), James
Catlett, and Henry Catlett. William, James, Henry, and Clarissa were all
children of Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Loveday. So Clarissa was suing her
mother her three brothers.
From the point of view of my own research, the main new information to
come
from the lawsuit is the marriage of Clarissa Catlett. I didn't know that
she had married, nor to whom. Her marriage record was surely destroyed in
the fire.
I found the following 1850 Blount County census records for Clarissa Catlett
and James B. Wells.
Blount County, Dist. 9, p.72b, HN 1032, FN 1032, 12 Nov 1850
Wells James B. 43 m w G & S Smith 1000 NC
Claresa 30 f w TN
Nancy C. 11 f w TN
Benj. 9 f w TN
Mary A. 7 f w TN
Amy 4 f w TN
John 3 m w TN
Johnson Elizab 20 f w TN
Anderson Mary C. 13 f w TN
Nancy age 11 and Benjamin age 9 were surely named for Clarissa's parents
Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Loveday. I don't know who James B. Wells'
parents were, but looking at the children's names one might suspect they
were John Wells and Mary.
