Jerry: I have enjoyed reading about this tale and seeing you work it
out
and i
have only a comment: REmember, there are other places called Jefferson
City
most notably the capital of Missouri and LOTS of folks from Tennesse and Ky
went
to that area int he time frame youa re speaking of. Beyond that my only
interest has been to see if you get further back on your lines as that is
where
i may eventually be able to conect up! Good luck in your continued
pursuits as
on the Catletts!!!

Your advice about "Jefferson City" is very wise, and I wish I had thought of
it myself. I research in Sevier County, Tennessee and Jefferson County,
Tennessee all the time. Several of my families lived close to the county
line and readily moved back an forth (or the line itself moved, or nobody
knew exactly where the line was). So when I read of Sevier County folk
moving to Jefferson City, it is very easy to conclude that they moved to the
one in Jefferson County, Tennessee. (Example: many of my ancestors are
buried in the Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery. The cemetery is in Sevier
County, about a mile from the Jefferson County line. But I have death
certificates which say that somebody was buried at the Bryan-Drinnen-Cate
Cemetery in Jefferson County. Needless to say, I can go out today and see
their stone in Sevier County.)
But in the meantime, a very curious fact has arisen. First, here is the
Jefferson City quote from the Dr. Joseph A. Sharp collection.
> "Seems whole family of Henry Catlett moved to Jefferson
City.
Well, I now have the 1870 and 1880 census entries for Henry S. Catlett.
Both of them are in Blount County, Tennessee. Blount County is adjacent to
Sevier County just as Jefferson County is adjacent to Sevier County. But
Blount County and Jefferson County are in absolutely the opposite directions
from each other, relative to Sevier County. And I never heard of a
Jefferson City in Blount County.
So the kernel of truth is that Henry S. Catlett did in fact leave Sevier
County between 1860 and 1870, but he ended up in Blount County (in the town
of Maryville, actually) rather than in Jefferson City (Tennessee or
Missouri).
I am well aware of the Missouri connection to Tennessee. My father's lines
are all from Sevier County, TN (and nearby counties such as Jefferson,
Greene, and Knox). My mother's lines are all from Anderson County, TN (and
nearby counties such as Morgan, Roane, Loudon, and Knox). But lots of folks
from both areas ended up in Missouri. I have chased some of these people to
Missouri -- Lafayette, Sullivan, Benton, and Mercer counties so far. But
I've got a lot more chasing to do in Missouri.
I live in Knox County, TN myself, and I am a 7th or 8th generation East
Tennessean in nearly all my lines. If anybody needs a census lookup (or
marriage or deed or settlement or anything like that) from around here, let
me know and I'll see what I can do.
