Can you shed any light on the parents of this Catlett? (It amounts
to
idle curiosity on my part.) This John Catlett married Lucy
Tucker who was an Anderson, SC native - their first child (that I am aware
of) was born Jan 1860.
1. JOHN1 CATLETT was born February 17, 1828 in Sevierville, TN, and
died
February 28, 1902 in Anderson, SC. He married LUCY TUCKER. She was born
December 08, 1834, and died April 19, 1927 in Anderson, SC.
Notes for JOHN CATLETT:

There's a bit of guesswork involved, but I think I can identify him. There
are two John Catlett's about the right age in the 1850 Sevier County, TN
census.

Catlett John 66 m farmer 1100 VA
Mary 65 f VA
John P. 20 m TN
Note that Mary and the elder John were both born in VA (assuming we trust
this data). I believe the elder John was the son of Reuben Catlett. John
P. Catlett was born about 1830, but that's pretty close to 1828.

William 6 f (sic) TN attended school

I believe John Catlett age 22 was the son of Samuel Catlett and Hannah and
the grandson of Reuben Catlett. This John was certainly born about 1828.

Their son John is not living with Samuel and Hannah. Notice that Samuel and
Hannah were both born in Tennessee (assuming we trust this data). I can
report that the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Sevier County censuses also report
Samuel and Hannah both born in Tennessee. But the GEDCOM for this family at
rootsweb.com has Samuel born in VA and Hannah born in TN. Were the Catletts
in in Tennessee yet in 1798? I don't think so, but I haven't been
researching the family long enough yet to know for sure. So let's
provisionally say that Samuel was b. in VA and his wife Hannah was b. in TN.
This is a very crucial point, and if I'm wrong it changes things. See
below.
I can also report that neither of the John Catletts we are looking at were
in the 1860, 1870, or 1880 censuses for Sevier County. So they apparently
moved or died. But there is likewise nothing in the 1860, 1870, and 1880
Sevier County censuses that would help us choose between the two John's.
Now we switch to the 1880 census, Anderson County, SC.

I mistrust both census ages and census birth places. But even so, this
looks to me more like John Catlett, son of Samuel Catlett and Hannah than it
does like John P. Catlett, son of John Catlett and Mary. I have to admit to
being influenced by your report that John Catlett who married Lucy Tucker
was born 28 Feb 1828, and the fact that John P. Catlett was 20 years old in
the 1850 census and the other John was 22 years old. It's hard to make the
birth places fit no matter what you do.
Lucy certainly must be Lucy Tucker. But I think it's a close call as to
which of the two Johns this is. For example, I was able to find five
children of Samuel Catlett and Hannah in the 1880 Sevier County census. For
each of the five, it said that both their father and mother were born in
Tennessee. This almost made me change my guess before I hit SEND. So if
you don't like my guess, I don't blame you in the least. But I do think we
have it down to only two possibilities.
