Hi Jerry,
Per your latest messages, can you further identify
the Reuben who had these sons, Samuel, John and Benjamin?
I really can't. Sorry.
I probably need to clarify. As I said in my first post, I have only just
started working on the Catletts. Most of what I have is not based on
primary source documents, but rather GEDCOM's that others have posted. I am
now doing what I call "due diligence" -- chasing down census records,
marriage records, tax lists, tombstone transcriptions, wills, settlements,
deeds, death certificates, and the like. This process is much complicated
by the 1856 Sevier County courthouse fire.
I now have the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census entries for the Catletts in
Sevier County, for example, and I found the 1880 census entry for John
Catlett of Sevier County who was then living in Anderson County, South
Carolina. I have all the Catlett tombstone transcriptions for Sevier
County, and have visited the Shiloh Cemetery to verify the accuracy of some
of the transcriptions there. I have also read rather quickly through the
Catlett folder in the Dr. Joseph A. Sharp collection at the Sevier County
library. Joe Sharp was the longtime historian of Sevier County. I need to
make copies and study his Catlett folder in some detail.
In the case of Reuben Catlett, all I have at this point are two GEDCOMs from
www.rootsweb.com. There are not very many Reuben Catletts on
www.rootsweb.com, so if you just search for Reuben Catlett, you can easily
find the entries I am talking about. One of the entries is in the henryjj
data base (look down the right side of the screen) and the other entry is in
the tjglad data base.
When I was asserting that certain people were sons of Reuben Catlett, I
probably should have been more judicious in my use of language to clarify
that I hadn't personally verified the information. On the other hand, I
have personally transcribed the census entries I have been posting.
The
ancestry.com GEDCOMs say that Reuben Catlett was born in England about
1760, died in Virginia after 1810, and his wife is unknown. One of the
GEDCOMs does not provide a citation. The other one cites Goodspeed's
History of East Tennessee, 1887 -- a standard resource. Hence, I am
willing to accept the Reuben Catlett data provisionally pending having time
to check the Goodspeed citation myself.
