Hi Jerry, I'm related to a Jane Catlett Henry she married
Rev.John Henry
in 1850 in Cosby,Cocke Co.TN. They lived in Sevierville in the 1860-70s
before moving to McNairy Co.TN in the late 1870s. I have been unable to
connect her to parents either, do you have any info on a Jane Catlett born
1822 in your file? The possibilities are John Catlett, Benjamin Catlett or
Samuel Catlett maybe even Rubein Catlett any light on this would be a
blessing to me.
I have Jane listed as the daughter of John Catlett and Mary, and therefore
as granddaughter of Reuben Catlett and unknown. This is not based on my own
research (remember that I have just started working on the Catletts).
Rather, it is based on research posted at
www.rootsweb.com. You should be
able to find it pretty easily with the rootsweb search engine.
Research notes for the GEDCOM at
rootsweb.com say that Jane Catlett and
Lofty Catlett were both born in 1822, and that the way the dates work out,
one must be the child of John Catlett and Mary, and that the other must be
the child of Samuel Catlett and Hannah. The research notes say further that
in 1880, Lofty had Samuel and Hannah in his household. Therefore, Lofty was
likely the son of Samuel and Hannah, by a process of elimination making Jane
the daughter of John Catlett and Mary.
However, I just checked the LDS nationwide transcription for the 1880
census. The LDS transcription does not give dwelling numbers or family
numbers, but it does show page numbers and you can see who was enumerated
next to whom. It shows Samuel and Hannah on p.390 and Lofty (L.H.) on
p.366. Further, it shows Samuel and Hannah living next to or in the same
house with (can't tell for sure without the dwelling number) James E.
Catlett, who was a son of Samuel and Hannah. So I feel a need to go to the
library to look at the microfilm for the 1880 census.
Also, the Sevier County library has an all names index online for the 1880
Sevier County census. Here are the entries for the Catletts. These entries
seem to agree with the LDS transcription.
CATLETT
Ira 24, Nancy M. 23, Magnola 4, William P. 3, James L. 1 (390)
James E. 46, D. Anna 46, Elija 22, Hannah J. 21, Samuel 20, James Henry
13, Hatta M. 11, Mary D. A
9 (390)
James P. 59*, Nancy 37, James W. 7, Carrie 2, Kate 1 (369)
L H. 59 (m) Jane 55, Mary M. 33, Samuel 28, Lenard 24, Henry 18, Rebeca
J. 15, William 11 (366)
Robert 23, Mary 22, Rue 3 (472)
Samuel 75, Hannah 75 (390)
William 63* (371)
Finally, both the 1830 and the 1840 censuses for Sevier County are online at
the Sevier County library. Both 1830 and 1840 show daughters for both
Samuel and John who were born in the 1821-1825 time frame. So unless I am
missing something really obvious on the 1880 census, I don't think there is
enough information to tell who Jane's parents were.
