Surname: Catlett, Dorsey, Gassaway, Porter, Beall
-------------------------
It is now a fact after finding letters and papers written by and belonging
to Hanson George Catlett, that he was the son of Grandison (son of Alexander
Catlett and Susanah Beall) Catlett and Mary (Polly) Gassaway (dau. of Charles
Gassaway and Ruth Beall.) Grandison and Polly had a daughter, Mary also.
Mary Gassaway was first married to Caleb Dorsey and they had three known
daughters. Mary Catlett married William Porter. William contributed to
Edgar Allan Poe's Journal (from Warfield, Founders of Anne Arundel.)Hanson
George and Mary are mentioned in Polly's will, from Abstracts of Wills,
Montgomery County, Maryland, 1826-1875, Silver Spring, Maryland: Family
Line Publications, 1987, P. 28. Mary Porter established a girl's school,
in Brookeville,Montgomery Co., MD called Mrs. Porter's Cottage School for
the Education of Young Ladies. She and her daughter, Williametta established
Briarly Hall in Poolesville, and ran it until her death. It is believed
that it later became a military academy. This information comes from the
Sandy Spring Museum, in the card file (no source identified.) The Brookville
cottage still remains today as a private residence at 210 Market St., part
of the historic district of Brookeville.
A book about the 18 years of H.G.'s life before his death, (1836-1854)
when he left his family to seek his furtune in Texas, is underway.
