Jerry:
I just happen to have this Catlett in my database; I have no connection to
him but I copied this down because I DO have a Catlett connection way back
-
mid 1600's with Susannah Catlett who married John Spearman in Virginia.
Can you shed any light on the parents of this Catlett? (It amounts to
idle
curiosity on my part.) This John Catlett married Lucy Tucker who was an
Anderson, SC native - their first child (that I am aware of) was born Jan
1860.
1. JOHN1 CATLETT was born February 17, 1828 in Sevierville, TN, and died
February 28, 1902 in Anderson, SC. He married LUCY TUCKER. She was born
December 08, 1834, and died April 19, 1927 in Anderson, SC.
Notes for JOHN CATLETT:

I posted a rather longwinded response to this message back in June, complete
with supporting census data.
The problem is that there were two John Catletts in Sevier County, Tennessee
at the same time who were about the same age. It's hard to tell which of
the two was the one who moved to Anderson County, South Carolina. One of
the John Catletts was the son of John Catlett and Mary, and the grandson of
Reuben Catlett. The other John Catlett was the son of Samuel Catlett and
Hannah, and the grandson of Reuben Catlett. So either way, the two John
Catletts were both grandsons of Reuben Catlett and therefore were first
cousins.
I concluded that you couldn't tell for sure which was which, but that it was
more likely that the son of Samuel and Hannah moved to South Carolina, and
that the son of John and Mary stayed in Tennessee. My conclusion was based
primarily on birth places from census data, as unreliable as such birth
places might be.
I still agree with that conclusion, and I have one more bit of data to
support it. I found exact birth and death dates for the John Catlett who
stayed in Tennessee, based on his tombstone. We have John P. Catlett, b. 20
Jan 1830, d. 28 Mar 1859, bur. Alder Branch Cemetery, Sevier County,
Tennessee.
Both John Catletts in question were enumerated in Sevier County in 1850.
Neither was enumerated in Sevier County in 1860. In one case, it was
because he moved to South Carolina. In the other case, I now know it was
because he died in 1859.
The John who was the son of Samuel and Hannah was listed as 22 years old in
the 1850 census. The John who was the son of John and Mary was listed as 20
years old in the 1850 census. I certainly mistrust census ages as much as
anyone. But we know that the John who moved to South Carolina was born in
1828, and we know that the John who stayed in Tennessee was born in 1830.
So the 1850 census plus the known exact birth dates of the two Johns seems
to provide additional weight to the theory that the John Catlett who moved
to South Carolina was the son of Samuel and Hannah, and that the John
Catlett who stayed in Tennessee was the son of John and Mary.
