Elizabeth Underwood did not marry 3 times--she married four times.
1. Elizabeth UNDERWOOD was born in VA, and
married (1)Dr. James TAYLOR whom she divorced in 1654. Elizabeth
(Underwood) (Taylor) Slaughter was named in the will of Dr. James
Taylor, her ex-husband.
2. Elizabeth (Underwood) Taylor married (2) Col. Francis SLAUGHTER,
Sr. in 1653/55. Col. Slaughter left his estate to Elizabeth and
Francis Slaughter, Jr.
3. Elizabeth (Underwood) (Taylor) Slaughter married (3) Col. John
CATLETT, Sr. on 01 or 14 January, 1663, in Rappahannock County, VA.
Col. John CATLETT, Sr., born about 1624, Canterbury, England, married
(1) Miss LUCUS. Elizabeth (Underwood) (Taylor) (Slaughter) Catlett
and Col. John Catlett, Sr. had 4 children before Col. Catlett died.
4. Elizabeth married (4) Rev. Amory BUTLER, on 20-Apr-1672, in
Richmond County, VA.
Elizabeth died 1673, Rappahannock County, VA, Her very lengthy will
was probated, on 7 Mar-1673 in Rappahannock County, VA. In her will,
Elizabeth Underwood (Taylor) (Slaughter) (Catlett) Butler named her
children Francis Slaughter, Sarah Catlett, John Catlett, Elizabeth
Catlett, and William Catlett.
Col. John CATLETT, Sr., (Immigrant.). b. abt. 1624, Canterbury,
England, was christened 12-Mar-1625/6, St. Peter's, Canterbury, Eng.,
(son of the late John CATLET, (ye. younger) and Sarah HAWKINS. Col.
John CATLETT was a Surveyor, Justice, and Burgess. John married
.first Miss LUCUS, b. England, d. bef 1650?, County Kent, England.
John's second marriage 01 or 14-Jan-1663, in Rappahannock Co., VA,
was to Elizabeth (UNDERWOOD) (TAYLOR) SLAUGHTER, b. VA, (daughter of
Col. John UNDERWOOD, and Margaret __?__.).
Col. John CATLETT, Sr. died 18-Apr-1670, Port Royal, Caroline Co., VA
(or 31 Dec.,. His will was probated, on 7 May, 167_, Port Royal was,
on the Rappahannock River. In 1650 John CATLETT came to VA to the
banks of the Rappahannock River. He was a colonel in the Colonial
Militia of Rappahannock Co, killed while defending the fort near Port
Royal from the Indians. In 1654 in Col. John CATLETT was in Lancaster
Co. VA, where he was a Vestryman of Sittingbourne Parish in Va;
active in campaigns against the Indians. He was one of three
Commissioners chosen to settle the boundary between Virginia &
Maryland (the Mason-Dixon Line.) He was also Sheriff and a Presiding
Justice of Rappahannock Co., VA. John left his estate in Kent Co.,
England to provide an education in England for his children. John
owned over 12,000 acres in VA with Ralph ROWZEE, his younger
half-brother
In her will, Elizabeth UNDERWOOD (TAYLOR) (SLAUGHTER) (CATLETT)
BUTLER named her five children-- Francis Slaughter, Jr., John
Catlett, Jr., Elizabeth Catlett, Sarah Catlett,, and William Catlett.
Executor and guardian of her children was to be Armory Butler with
overseers of Capt. Thos. Hawkins, Edward Rowzie, and Mr. Dan'l Gaines.
Col. John Catlett, Sr.'s children by Miss LUCUS:
i. Nicholas CATLETT, (Immigrant).b. 1645.
ii. Maj. Thomas CATLETT, (Immigrant).. (Immigrant). b. County Kent,
England, Occupation Sheriff of Essex Co., VA, d. VA. In 1661 Thomas
Catlett witnessed a deed made in Essex Co., VA, by his father John,
and stepmother, Elizabeth Catlett. From Land Books at Richmond, VA,
Thomas owned 1,000 acres in Spotsylvania Co., VA--Bk. XII, pg. 308.
Thomas transferred this land to Francis Conway, gent. on Nov. 7, 1727
for £60. Francis Conway then transferred this land on the same date
to John Taliaferro of Spotsylvania Co., VA. Thomas owned much land in
Spotsylvania, & Caroline Counties.
