Hello To All,
My line is said to be from John Catlett who married 1st Ursula Bailey,
2nd Margaret Puffenberger. John and Ursulas last child Basil m
Elizabeth Luttrell d/o James Luttrell and Celia Catlett who was d/o
William Catlett and 2nd wife Margaret Miller. John Catlett is said to be
only child of William Catlett and 1st wife Lettice Lee.
Basil and Elizabeth are my great great grandparents. They are on the
1850 Frederick County Census, District 16. Their address is referred to
as Acorn Hill on the 1860 Census. I think this is Whitacre, Va. or Cross
Junction, Va. I believe it is their home that still stands, right off of
US522. It was the home of their son Benjamin Franklin m Mary Jane
Crosen, my great grandparents. Just north from their home is the home my
father was born in, and I believe it to have been the home of John
Catlett m Phoebe Finch, half brother to Basil and next door neighbors to
my gg grandparents on these census. This is just north of Wesley Chapel
Church and Cemetery where many of my ancestors are buried, and very
close to the Morgan County WV border.
My grandparents were Benjamin and Marys 5th son James Catlett who
married Samantha Sherrard. Their 6th son Oscar married Samanthas sister
Nannie Pearl and their 1st son William married Samantha and Pearls half
aunt Adlona Bennett. These two families have many more connections years
before these marriages. I find them all over the 1850 Frederick County
VA and Morgan County WV Census.
I live in Iowa and my only source of research is whats on the computer.
I work off of the two mentioned 1850 Census pages I have access to. Ive
not put any material on a program as yet and I have collected a lot of
info that needs to be verified.
As to John Catletts second marriage to Margaret Puffenberger, the 1850
Frederick County Census has a John and Margaret J. Catlett living next
door to a James and Selah (Celia) Luttrell, Johns half-sister and
husband. On the other side is Jacob and Ellen Puffenberger, I believe
the parents of Margaret J. And heres one of the connections I spoke of
earlier; I believe John and Margarets no named son on the census is
Jacob Catlett who married Martha D. Hinkle and their son Robert married
Laura Unger, granddaughter of my grandmothers great Aunt Sarah Ann
Sherrard who married John Wesley Unger. John Wesleys parents were John
W. Unger and Nancy Meeks. I do not know her family. And there are
Ungers and Catletts living together on these census.
The situation with the orphaned Catlett children of William Catlett and
Charlotte Iden and the orphaned Catlett children in Ohio has
similarities I keep coming back to. Both couples have been reported to
have been killed by Indians. Goodharts in Ohio, Gillharts in WV. This
county in Ohio that has only a hand full of families, how many Goohart
homes? The few Gillharts and Gilharts on the 1850 Morgan County Census
are all living in Catlett homes or a Catlett related home. There are no
Gillharts, either spelling, listed in the head of household position in
all of this census. One Gillhart adult on census has a birth place of
State Ohio. The Ohio orphans are said to be possibly the children of
William Catlett who married Elizabeth Farber on Sept. 5, 1829 in Morgan
County. There are no Farbers on the 1850 Morgan County Census. There
are two Favuers listed, one is Philip 50 M Cooper born in Morgan County
and listed as Insane. He is living in the Archibald Bohrer home, Catlett
connected. I believe Archibald is a brother to Adam Bohrer who married
Hannah Bailey d/o Thomas Bailey (I believe related to Ursula Bailey) and
Moica? Catlett. Dont know who she belongs to. Archibalds next door
neighbor is Elijah Hovermale whose sister Sarah married William Catlett
s/o William Catlett and 2nd wife Margaret Miller. Elijahs wife Nancy
Virginia Pritchard is said to be sister to Reese Pritchard III and Isom
Pritchard, brothers. Isom is housing a Catlett orphan. Also, Reese IIIs
wife Sarah Iden is sister to Charlotte Iden.
There is a Henry Gillhart 10 M living in the home of Lewis and Susannah
(I think maiden Catlett d/o William Catlett and Margaret Miller)
Shockey.
And then this info I found on a message board on
ancestry.com: The
marriage of a Edward C. Miller and Mary Farber April 5, 1845 in Morgan
County. The message says that Mary may have been widowed or divorced,
she is 18 years older than Edward. She may have been a Gilhart or
Gethart.
It appears to be Edward and Mary on the 1850 census with two Gilhart
teens living with them. I believe Edward married after Mary and had
children including one son, Martin who married Sarah Ellen Bohrer,
granddaughter of Adam and Hannah (Bailey) Bohrer.
Does anyone know who the parents are of this John Catlett b 1768 who
married Elizabeth? It appears by the age of John on this census, 82,
that it could be them on the Morgan County Census with a Sarah 25 F and
Mary 31 F living with them?
I realize this is very hard to follow, hope not too many typos, and
Karon has suggested that I do an annotated census abstract. Ive
hesitated because this is not all verified information and also because
of the old time issue; never seems to be enough of it.
