1. John1 CATLET, Sr, born 1540,abt in of Sittingbourne, County Kent, Eng., died 1588,aft.
He was of the English landed gentry and a desendant of Hugh de Catte, who lived at Catts
Place where the manor was called Catlet's Salmon-- before 1464. Hugh de Catte, as he
was an owner of "Catts Place" way before the 15th century. According to
'The History of County Kent, England', printed by Harris in 1917, "The
mansion was anciently the residence of Hugh de Catte, from whom it acquired its name. His
descendants continued to possess it until the Reign of Henry VI (1442)." (Vol.
III,page 2.

("eldest son"), Thomas Catlett, John Catlett, Mary Gibbs, Alice Wills, George
Catlett ("youngest son"), Elizabeth Catlett, and Jane Catlett. George-the
youngest son, Elizabeth, and Jane were not 18 when John made his will. Grandchildren
listed were John Gibbs, Henery Gibbs, Elizabeth Gibbs, Mary Gibbs, Ann Chambers, John
Wills, Debora Wills, and Walter Wills. His 2nd wife, Elizabeth, was executrix of the
will, proved 16 April, 1622.

Kent, England, died 1624/25 in Bettersden, County Kent, England, christened 13-Oct-1625 in
Will was probated to widow. English landed gentry. John's will--Consistory Court of
Canterbury; will register deposited at the Kent Archives Office, Maidstone. Ref. PRC32/46
Folio 273d. John named his brothers, sisters, and their offspring in his will. His wife
Sara was named executrix. He suspected that his wife might be pregnant, so he provided
also for his unborn child. John [iv] was born about 5 months after his father's
death--as proved by parish baptismal record. John [iv] was their "second
child."
He married Sarah HAWKINS, married 10-Apr-1623 in Preston nr. Faversham, County Kent,
Eng., born 1602/04 in Kent, England, (daughter of Ralph HAWKINS and Martha BALDWIN).
Sarah: Based on her age on first marriage license, Sarah was born about 1604. Based on
her age on the second marriage license, Sarah was born about 1602. After the death of her
husband, John Catlet [iii], Sarah left her home in Sittingbourne Parish and returned to
the home of her father, Ralph Hawkins, in Canterbury for the birth of her posthumous
child.

died in VA, occupation Sheriff of Essex Co., VA. In 1661 Thomas Catlett witnessed a deed
made in Essex Co., VA, by his father John, and stepmother, Elizabeth Catlett. From Land
Books at Richmond, VA, Thomas owned 1,000 acres in Spotsylvania Co., VA--Bk. XII, pg. 308.
Thomas transferred this land to Francis Conway, gent. on Nov. 7, 1727 for 60 pounds.
Francis Conway then transferred this land on the same date to John Taliaferro of
Spotslvania Co., VA. Thomas owned much land in Spotsylvania, & Caroline Counties.
He married (2) Elizabeth UNDERWOOD, married 01/14-Jan-1663 in Rappahannock Co., VA,
born <1640 in VA, (daughter of John UNDERWOOD, Col and Margaret) died 1673 in
Rappahannock Co., VA. Elizabeth: In her will, Elizabeth Underwood (Taylor) (Slaughter)
(Catlett) Butler named her children Francis Slaughter, Sarah Catlett, John Catlett,
Elizabeth Catlett, and William Catlett. Executor and guardian of her children was to be
Armory Butler with overseers of Capt. Thos. Hawkins, Edward Rowzie, and Mr. Dan'l
Gaines. According to Rigsby, Elizabeth was the step-daughter of Col. John Underwood.

proved 19 Jan., 1724/5, christened in (called "the 2nd John"). Burgess
(1693-1702); Justice of the peace (1692); coroner (1700); President of the Court, Sheriff
(1705); Essex Co., VA. Patented lands extensively in Spotsylvania Co. & elsewhere, ;
in 1701 gave power of attorney to John Mumford of London to sell all lands at
Sittingbourne, Kent Co., Eng., and at Radwischeim, which he inherited from his father.
Last Will is recorded in Essex Co., VA, Wills, Bonds, Inv. #4 (1722-1730) Part 1, p. 84.
His will is very long because he was a very wealthy man with much land, slaves,
silver,etc.
He married (1) __?__ SMITH (daughter of Lawrence SMITH, Maj. and Mary DEBNAM: There
are deeds recorded in Spotsylvania Co., VA, to Jno Catlett, Jr. and Richd. Buckner, in
1722, from Augustine Smith, the son of Major Lawrence Smith. Many believe that John
Catlett married a daughter of Major Lawrence Smith. The Catletts owned a large estate at
the mouth of Golden Vale Creek in present Caroline Co.

27-Oct-1724 in made will. Will of Lawrence Catlett mentions his wife, Alice; & his
brothers, John and Thomas Catlett. His wife and father-in-law, Francis Thornton were named
as executors.
He married Alice THORNTON, (daughter of Francis THORNTON, Sr.
Col and Alice SAVAGE). Alice: Dau. of Francis Thornton; m. (2) James Taylor, b. 1705, d.
1784, and had Taylor children.
ii. Elizabeth CATLETT, born 06-Sep-1689, died 1751. Rowland
Thornton left his wife 5 Negroes--Frank, Robin, Peter, Caesar, and Bess; also Joe and
Jenny; first choice of 30 head of cattle; all of his hogs, household goods; and all of her
personal Estate both in VA and in England. She was also given the plantation on which she
lived for her lifetime.
She married Rowland THORNTON, married 24-Mar-1714/15< in
King George Co., VA, born 01-Aug-1685 in "Fall Hills," Stafford Co., VA, (son of
Francis THORNTON, Sr. Col and Alice SAVAGE) died 1741 in King George Co., VA, occupation
Justice of Peace. Rowland: f "Crowes," King George Co., VA. Rowland was a very
wealthy man who bequeathed land, slaves, and cattle to his children. His son Francis and
his brother Anthony were appointed as administrators of his estate which Rowland directed
not to be appraised. Rowland signed his will on 21 Sept., 1741. It was witnessed by
William Mackay and John Moore.
He married (2) Elizabeth GAINES, married aft., 1682, born 1652, (daughter of Daniel
GAINES, Capt. and Margaret ROWZIE). Elizabeth: Charles Hughes Hamlin, Professional
Genealogist, who worked in conjunction with David A. Avant, Jr. could not find evidence to
prove that Col. John Catlett, Jr. married Elizabeth Gaines--nor any information about her
parentage. Their marriage is widely accepted by all writers and genealogists of the
family. In 1706 MARY Catlett released her dower when her husband, John sold lands ....SO
her name could have been MARY--not ELIZABETH. No original documents are available to
prove the name "Elizabeth."

Aug.1744. John: 6 Oct., 1736, John Taliaferro was commissioned as a Lt. Col.in
Spotsylvania Co., VA.--Spotsylvania Co., VA. Order Book (1730-1738), p. 472. He was named
in the will of his father, made in 1715 and proved in 1720 in Essex Co., VA. John of Snow
Creek is the Major John, who was requested "to bring up the Surplice in 1730 to the
newly established church at Germana; he was a man of note in the Colony. John was a
Justice of Spotsylvania Co., 1720; and a vestryman of St. George's Parish in 1725.
vi. Rebecca CATLETT, born 1707, died 1760. Rebecca Catlett
(Conway) Moore's will was made 6 Nov., 1759, and was probated 8 March, 1760.
She married (1) Francis CONWAY, married bef. 1722, born 1697,
(son of Richard CONWAY and Elizabeth THORNTON) died abt. 1733, christened 12-Apr-1733 in
Will. Francis: Of Orange County, VA,. According to Robert James Winfield, Francis Conway
was born 15 Apr., 1695.
She married (2) John MOORE, Gent, christened 1749 in Will
probated, King George Co., VA.
vii. Margaret CATLETT. John Catlett left his homeplace, "Green
Hill" and 1800 acres of land on the Rappahannock River in Essex Co to Margaret
provided that she remain single. Margaret married late in life, "preferring matrimony
to patrimony and forfeited her right" to the legacy.
She married Jonathan GIBSON, Jr, born bef. 1697, (son of
Jonathan Edmund GIBSON and Jane LANGHORNE) died 1745, occupation Clerk of Orange Co., VA.
Jonathan: David E. Wilson reported Jonathan died about 1730 from poisoning, in Orange
County, VA, and that this Jonathan was an immigrant.

Sarah and Elizabeth, sold 300 acres of land in Essex County in 1687 which was part of the
land bequeathed to the said Sarah and Elizabeth by their father John Catlett..."

of Lands, May 4, 1691, by Wm Moseley for Francis Taliaferro "As marrying Elizabeth,
daughter of Colonel John Catlett. Other proofs of parentage: On 28 Sept.,1682, Francis
Taliaferro of Gloucester made a deed to brother John Taliaferro of Rappahannock Co. On
that same day Francis also made deeds to brother Richard Taliaferro.
Francis was a Planter.

a lease and release of land to Robert Taliaferro of Stafford, his brother, he says the
land was taken up by his father, Francis Taliaferro, in co-partnership with Henry Brice.

He married Agatha HAY. Agatha: Other (Rigsby and Moursund)
provided the surname of STROTHER for this lady. On Aug. 17, 1725, Agatha Taliaferro, wife
of John Taliaferro in a court in Essex County, VA, gave William Beverley power of attorney
to represent her in court to relinquish her dower rights to the 400 acres on Peumansond
Swamp, which her husband, John, was in the process of conveying to Robert Taliaferro of
Stafford County, VA.

Will in Essex Co. for Robert Taliaferro, recorded 3 Dec., 1725, leaving property to sister
Eliz. wife of Thom. Stripling, her sons, Francis, William, & Taliaferro, Francis sold
the dower portion of Elizabeth's property in 1765,
Elizabeth signed her dower interest in 1746, but in 1750,
when Thomas sold land and she did not co-sign.ever thereafter. This gives evidence that
Elizabeth died between 1746 and 1750.
She married Thomas STRIBLING, I, married abt 1710 in
"Taliaferro's Mount," Essex Co., VA,, born abt. 1688 in England/VA, died
Mar-1755 in Prince William County, VA, buried in "Rosemont"/Manassas Presby. Ch.
Thomas: According VA Wills & Adm. Tho. STRIBLING, I. came to VA in 1710 where he m.
in 1715 Elizabeth Taliaferro & on July 17, 1727, rc'd grant of 1050 ac. near Bull
Run, (now Pr. Wm. CO., VA.) According to George T. Stribling , the first appearance of
Thomas Stribling was Sept. 4, 1710, in Richmond Co., VA where he purchased clothes--maybe
for his wedding. Tho. purchased 600 acres at Winchester, Frederick (now Clarke) Co.,
VA. 1752 Striblings were of Welsh origin.

23 July 1754 Colclough Stribling was paid for attending court
for two days in the suit of Edward Templeman vs William Powell Riggin. The same suitwas
continued and on 23 Aug 1756 he was paid for five days attendance.
There was a suit against the estate. 26 May 1757 John
Dawkins filed suit against Francis and Taliaferro Stribling exrs of Thomas Stribling
dec'd and Edward Snickers attended four days as witness.
iv. Francis TALIAFERRO, Jr, born bef. 1697, died young. Francis
Taliaferro was mentioned in the Will of his uncle, William Catlett, dated 1697 and proved
in 1699.
v. Robert TALIAFERRO, IV, born 1698, died 09-May-1726 in Essex
Co., VA, buried in "Eagle's Nest", probate 21-Jun-1726 in Will was proved.
Robert did not marry. Robert was known as Robert Taliaferro of Stafford. In his will
which was recorded in Essex Co., VA, on 3 Dec., 1725, he named his brothers and sister,
Eliz. (Elizabeth) wife of Thomas Stripling and 3 of their children--Francis, Wm., &
Taliaferro, and his sister (in-law) Agatha Taliaferro as his heirs.
vi. Richard TALIAFERRO, Sr., Col, born 1705, died 03-Jul-1779,
occupation Architect. Virginia Gazette, July 3, 1779, "died Richard Taliaferro,
Esq., in the 74th year of his age, with gout in his head." Richard lived in James
City, VA. Richard made his will 3-Feb-1775 and it was proved 19 Aug., 1779. Richard was
the architect for the Govenors' Palace, the Capitol, and the President's house at
William and Mary College. Richard built the beautiful house "Powhatan" outside
Williamsburg, VA. The bricks for this house were imported from England.
He married Elizabeth Ann EGGLESTON. Elizabeth: Lived James
City Co., VA.
vii. William TALIAFERRO, Capt, born 17-Jan-1707, died 1757,
occupation Justice of Essex Co., VA.
He married Anne WALKER, born 17-Jan-1707/8, (daughter of
James Walker and Clara Robinson) christened in Lived Essex Co., VA/of Urbana.
12. Sarah5 CATLETT, (7.John4, 3.John3 CATLET, (ye. younger)., 2.John2, 1.John1) born
1666, died 1726. Marriage of Sarah Catlett and Robert Taliaferro, II is proved by Deed,
1687, and Court Record, 25 March, 1692, Essex Co., VA. Wm. & Mary Quarterly, Vol. 20,
p. 266 et seq..."Robert Taliaferro Junior and Francis Taliaferro, with their wives,
Sarah and Elizabeth, sold 300 acres of land in Essex County in 1687 which was part of the
land bequeathed to the said Sarah and Elizabeth by their father, John Catlett..." In
1688 both Francis and John Taliaferro gave bond for Mrs. Sarah Taliaferro, widow of their
brother Robert.
She married Robert TALIAFERRO, II, married 1682, born 1652 in Richmond, VA, (son of
Robert TALIAFERRO, I. (Immigrant and Cathrine DEBNAM) died bef.6 Jan 1688 in Spotsylvania
Co., VA. Robert: In 1672-3 Robert Taliaferro, Jr. "Son of Robert Taliaferro"
had a grant of land on the Rappahannock River, adjoining the land of Henry Corbin &
Mr. Grymes which was due him,..as the grandson of Mr. Grymes. On 1 June, 1687, Robert T.,
Jr. gave bond for the estate of Robert Taliaferro, deceased. An alternative marriage date
is before April 6, 1687, Essex, VA.
Children:
i. Robert6 TALIAFERRO, III, born abt. 1688 in Rappahannock Co.,
VA, died 1768. In 1711-12 Robert Taliaferro, calling himself "only son and heir
apparent of Robert Taliaferro, deceased," made a bond to Augustine Smith. In Jan.,
1724, Robert Taliaferro, the elder, gave his two daughters, Ann and Elizabeth, a negro
apiece. These are the only two children proved. (Madison) Samuel Taliaferro of
Albemarle County is assumed to be his son. 11 Aug., 1717. St. Mary's Parish, Essex Co.
made deed asserting himself as the only son of Robert Taliaferro.
He married (1) Margaret FRENCH, married 7-Aug-1711,bef,
(daughter of Hugh FRENCH and Margaret MILLER). Margaret: Margaret Taliaferro, on Aug. 7,
1711, appointed R. Buckner, Attorney, to relinquish dower in 100 acres sold by her
