Obituary The Standard, Milan, Mo May 30, 1922, Pg.5 Col. 5
MEEKS: Martha Jane Meeks was born in old Virginia in the month of Oct. 1826, died March
22,
1922, being 94 years old. In early life she gave her life to Christ uniting with the
Christian church. Mrs.
Meeks was a mother of 8 children, two of the children and the husband preceeded her to the
great
beyond. Six children and many relatives are left to mourn her departure. Funeral services
were held in
the Christian church conducted by her pastor, Martin L. Holloway.
Birth: 1831 in Monroe Cty,OH
These notes were prepared by James & Luana Halliday; 1106 Logan St. Pt. Townsend, WA
95368 and given to the Hood's by David Cox; 2221 Bracken Ln. Northfield, IL 60093:
Martha Jane was first discovered in the 1850 Monroe County, Ohio census list her with her
husband, Nathan. According to the census she had been married that year. I have been
unable to find a marriage record for the couple because a courthouse fire in 1867
destroyed all marriage and birth records. I think the family must have moved around a lot
because the children were born in Nobel, Guernsey and Cincinnati, Ohio. [NOTE: from
Jeannie Rabbitt, it's quite possible also that the county lines changed and the family
stayed in the same place!] No other census records for the family have been found until
their move to Sullivan County, Missouri.
Nathan disappeared sometime after the birth of their last child. Regardless of what
happened, Nathan was never heard from again. A few years after that Martha and her family
moved to Sullivan County, Missouri with the help of her brother William. Martha is listed
in the 1880 census of Perry co, OH with her three youngest children. She was listed as
being divorced. She moved to Milan, Sullivan Co, MO and is lsited in the 1900 census as
the head of household. The census indicated that whe was born Oct 1830 in Virginia. Also
living with her was Nellie Gates, daughter of Barbara Ella Gates. She is also listed in
the 1910 census of Sullivan County as the head of household. All of Martha's children
except for James, married in Sullivan County. James and George were the only two that
remained there, the rest left for Oklahoma in the early 1900's. Gus Meeks and his
family (except for Nellie) were murdered. (See "Meeks Murders of Sullivan Co.")

Hannah Starr was twenty years old when his first child by Melissa Tate was born and he
died when Mary Eunice was twenty her children did not have the opportunity to have much
family history. She did however before her death give us some of this information, but we
would like more. Anyone out there know anything about the children of Hannah Starr? My
husband is child number five of Mary Eunice."
