Hello All:
Yes, I'm home for awhile. I wish I was more active in doing my Catlett
research, but free time seems to be in short supply for me this summer. I
was able to visit my Grandfather Catlett in Nebraska this past June one
last time. We knew he didn't have much time and I had my fingers crossed
that he would still be with us by the time my planned vacation rolled
around, he was; he died a week after I saw him. I then flew back to
Nebraska for the funeral and family gathering. I saw some of my relatives
that I don't see as often as I would like. We tried to make the gathering
a happy one by using the occasion to celebrate Grandpa's long and happy
life. I was able to use the two trips to gather more family papers and
photos and I passed out a CD-ROM compilation of family photos that my
mother and I had been scanning for the past 4 years. The CDs were greatly
welcomed since they included many photos that others had never seen or
didn't have copies of their own. Afterwards I created a memorial page for
my home page in honor of my Grandfather's life.
Am sorry to hear about your grandfather's death. I visited the memorial page
a week or so ago. Very nice job. I liked the picture of him with baton in
hand.
We lost a Catlett cousin on the 16th of July -- Virginia Lee (Wise) Shuyler.
She was my research partner for a very long time. We didn't work too much
together on the CATLETT line, but did tackle our Blackwood line way back in
1978. I was able to visit her in the hospital on the 14th and was able to say
good-bye to her. She leaves behind 3 adult children, none of whom have caught
the genealogy "bug" yet. The pastor worked genealogy into the memorial
service. And her kids aren't tossing out her notes in the trash. I went
through one box of her collection on the 22nd and will go back up to
Martinsburg around Labor Day to go through the rest of the boxes and go
through her computer. I have an unpublished manuscript of newspaper abstracts
from Berkeley Co., WV (1815-1850 or thereabouts). That she placed in my hands
18 months ago and I'd worked with her on it a little bit a few years ago, when
she was typing it into WordPerfect. She'd wanted me to publish it under my
name while she was alive, but I didn't want to do that 'cause it's not my
work. Her kids want me to go ahead and do something with it. We'll hash that
all out in September. I'm hoping to come across some CATLETT notes she
gathered from the families still in the Berkeley Co. area. She was supposed
to send them to me several years ago, but I don't recall having ever gotten
them. And they weren't in the box that I've already received. I think her
daughter (10 years younger than me) will eventually catch the "bug". I'll
save the papers for her (if I can figure where I'm going to store the
materials). [My place is already a BIG mess of papers!]
I have also had some rather unexpected e-mails from cousins
(including one
5th cousin once removed) I didn't know. They happened across my web page
and then contacted me with greetings, small chat and more information for
my pedigree charts. Always a nice surprise to have a new cousin pop out of
the e-wood work.
Cool! I had someone from this list sign my guestbook this week. I didn't
realize she was on the list when I replied to her. So, am hoping she'll post
her line to all the list members. She's descended from Nimrod CATLETT (s/o
Robert, grandson of Robert and Mary (Floyd) CATLETT).
