Luana Halliday e-mailed the following information to me on 11/16/99 regarding
our mutual interest in Martha Jane Catlett. She wrote:
Martha Jane Catlett, born 10-12-1827 VA (source obituary), I found her on the
1850 Monroe County Ohio census with her husband. Also in the 1850 census
were Henry Catlett age 10 living in the Winemiller household and John Catlett
age 12 living in the Goodhart household. After that Martha and her husband
disappeared from the Ohio census. I found them in the 1880 Sullivan County,
MO census. In the 1860 Monroe Co census John is listed as head of household
with wife Sarah and Alex Catlett with wife Emily. Alex was 29 in the 1860
census, and there was a William Catlett, wife Hannah and son's John H. age 2
and Henry age 8 months.(end of quote from Luana.)
Monroe and Noble Counties are adjacent to one another. William Catlett, my
wife's great grandfather settled in Sullivan Co, MO with his wife Hannah
Starr. William and Hannah were married may 21, 1857 in Noble Co. OH.
It appears as though John and Sarah, William and Hannah and Marha Jane and
her husband, Nathan Meeks, migrated to Sullivan County about the same time.
I wonder if the John Catlett living in the Goodhart home is possibly a
brother to both William and Henry who was living in the Winemiller household.
I have not been able to track where William was in the 1850 census. Family
stories tell that William's parents were William Catlett and Elizabeth
Farber. Also, family stories tell us that Catlett parents were killed by
Indians and their children were taken in by other families. Do you suppose
the Winemillers, Goodharts and others are those families? Perhaps William
and Elizabeth were the victims as told through family stories.
William and Hannah named their first child born in Ohio on May 20, 1858,
John Henry. John Henry died January 6, 1862
Additional data/knowledge/insights would be greatly appreciated. I did find,
by the way, through an
ancestry.com search that William Catlett and Elizabeth
Farber were married September 5, 1829 in Morgan County, VA.
