Greetings CATLETT Researchers --
I guess I've been a tad quiet of late. Bad times with my dad's former home in
Florida -- ongoing since July have kept me out of the loop, coupled with some
serious problems with mail delivery from my former ISP. (Please note that I
have an updated e-mail address, which I hope to keep for awhile:
tmg4me(a)vei.net).
Yesterday, I received an e-mail from listmember John Christensen (which he'd
sent to me Wednesday morning, but must've been delayed in delivery). That
e-mail contained John's message, plus an extract of a message from a field
engineer for a local wireless company to John, and it contained 2 file
attachments of pictures of a family headstone for two CATLETT families of
Summit (Summit Station), Spotsylvania Co., VA. The pictures were sent to John
by the field engineer, who was concerned about the condition of a cemetery
he'd come across in a rural section of Spotsylvania Co., VA.
I'm appealing to the list members to contact John or myself if you have family
from Spotsylvania, (preferably a CATLETT connection in the 20th C or
present-day). John's e-mail address: paws22(a)earthlink.net.
It's a joint headstone, containing the names of 4 family members. I presume
them to be father and son and their respective spouses. I've relied on data
from the Stubbs book to identify the CATLETT men and one of the wives.
The top of the heastone reads, "CATLETT"
The left side reads:
Vivian
1901-1952
Shirley
1898-1948
The right side reads:
Henry
1865-1919
Nellie
1869-1951
I searched my database for Henry and did not find him. I then searched for
women named "Nellie" who had married a CATLETT. I came up with Nellie EUBANK
who married Edward Henry CATLETT, whom Stubbs on p. 35 described as being of
Summit Station, Virginia. Edward Henry CATLETT, was the son Thomas Lawrence
CATLETT (d. 1879) and Nannie SCHOOLER. Thomas Lawrence was the son of Thomas
Lawrence CATLETT (b. ca. 1778, d. Jul 1821 of Guinea Station "Locust Hill",
Caroline Co., VA) and Maria FITZHUGH. The elder Thomas Lawrence CATLETT was
the son of John CATLETT (1733-1789) and Elizabeth THORNBERRY (b. ca. 1745-d.
ca. 1789). Edward Henry CATLETT had two children: Vivian and Sterling.
And for those still reading this who were on CompuServe before 1995, you might
recall Deb Koplen of Texas, whose mother had this same Vivian CATLETT as her
beaux. Her mother was still living at the time of her inqury about Vivian
CATLETT. I wasn't able to make a connection for her before because I had
"Vivian" recorded as being a daughter, not a son. I contacted Deb this
morning to let her know the fate of Vivian. Deb was delighted to learn about
Vivian, but she had bad news for me. Her mother passed away in 1997.

Thanks a bunch Carolyn, that kind of also clears up a ltttle more about maybe
Jane Catlett too would that Benjamin be her kin? She and John lived in
Sevierville in the 1860s still trying to find her parents. Take care,Doris
Catlettsburg is in Sevier county close to Douglas Lake I don't know who it
was named after but lots of Catletts live there. Benjamin Catlett fought in
the war of 1812 then settled in Sevierville I don't know if he had a land
grant or not but he ended up with quite a bit of land.

Hi to all on the list! After receiving a copy of Ann Elizabeth Catlett’s
death certificate I am still stuck at this wall. There was no reference to
her parents. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Here is what I know:
Ann Elizabeth Catlett born July 9, 1840 in Kentucky.
She married Woodford Chappell on February 2, 1859 in McDonough Co., IL. They
lived in IL until about 1867 then moved to Lewis County, Missouri.
They had the following children:
Ella born abt. 1861 in IL
Martin born abt. 1862 in IL
Ballard born abt. 1865 in IL
Mary born abt. 1867 in MO.
George W. born abt. 1869 in MO.
Emma born abt. 1870 in MO.
Amanda born abt. 1871 in MO.
Clara born abt. 1872 in MO.
Robert born abt. 1874 in MO.
Ida born abt. 1876 in MO.
Margaret "Maggie" born Dec. 14, 1877 in MO.
Ann Elizabeth Catlett Chappell died on April 3, 1921 in Henryetta, Oklahoma.
Her body was shipped back to Lewis County, Missouri to be buried next to
Ballard Chappell in Mount Salem Cemetery.
If anyone has any ideas on how I could find out who her parents were I would
greatly appreciate the advice.
Thanks in advance.
Edie
Hi to everyone,
Does anyone have information on the town of Catlettsburg,Tennessee? I have
asked several East Tennessee residents but no one seems to know anything
although its still on the map. What County is it in or any info on it would
be great and who is it named after? Thanks in advance for help. My
greatgreatgrandmother was Jane Catlett Henryb:1822 she married John Henry
b:1828 in Cosby,Cocke Co... TN. in 1850/2 at Union Baptist Church of Christ.
Does anyone know who her parents are and maybe her siblings. Their children
were Samuel, William, Hannah, they lived in Sevierville in the 1860s before
moving to McNairy Co..TN.
Thanks, Doris Henry Price

Surname: Catlett
-------------------------
Hazelwood Catlett is father of Laban Catlett. Born @ 1738 and died after
1773. All info I have. Unable to locate the father of Hazelwood.
I have just joined the CATLETT List although I have E-mailed a lot of
CATLETT researchers before but not for the last year-and-a-half or so. I
have a great-great-grandmother, Nancy CATLETT, who was first married to
a William DAVENPORT (or DEVENPORT) in November, 1808 at the St. John's
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, MD. I personally saw the
record of this marriage at the MD. Archives in Annapolis, MD. last
summer. I also perused the records for signs that they were members of
the church's congregation, took communion there, etc. There were records
of such things and I looked at years before and after for their names.
They did not seem to be members of the congregation, I never found their
names except when they married. The listing says - "William Devenport
and Nanzi Catlett". I'm reasonalbly sure that Nancy did not spell her
name that way and perhaps William, was a Davenport, however, we all know
that people spelled things as they sounded to them in those times so one
cannot be sure.
Something must have happened to their marriage (or William) because
Nancy then married my great-great-grandfather, John FILSON somewhere in
VA. or MD. (cannot find the record so far) and by 1812, they were having
children of their own. They had 8 children and moved from the area to
southeastern PA. and then OH., both dying in Alliance, Stark Co., OH.
John had been married before too in 1799 in Berkeley Co., VA. to a
Jemima BUTT ( I have this record). John and Jemima had 2 sons. These 2
sons grew up in the family of John and Nancy but there is sketchy
information that Nancy and William DEVENPORT had a son, and there is
never any mention of him that I can see.
I cannot place Nancy CATLETT with any CATLETT families in the area at
the time. Census records from later times say, both, that she was born
in Baltimore, MD., and in VA.I have speculated that Nancy and William
went across Potomac River to MD. to get married, for some reason and
they did not really live in MD. I have read that others did the same
thing. There were CATLETT families and DAVENPORT/DEVENPORT families in
Berkeley Co., VA., at the time. I need to do more research to find the
marriage record of Nancy and John FILSON in some Co's. surrounding
Berkeley Co., VA. and Washington Co., MD. In the 1810 Census, I found a
William Davenport living in Berkeley Co. with one (under 10 yrs. of age)
son and a female. Both he and the female are in the young 20's range. I
have no idea whether this is William and Nancy (CATLETT) DAVENPORT and
their young son, or not, because there were a lot of William Davenports
in the southern MD. and norhthern VA. area at the time.
Has anyone run across a Nancy CATLETT in any of the CATLETT families
that they are researching? She supposedly was born September 26, 1785 in
MD. ar VA. I suppose her name could have been CATTELL or CATTLE or
something else or she could have been married before William to a
CATLETT and that is how she got that name. I just do not know. If you
have any suggestions, let me know. If William died by the end of 1810 or
in 1811, several years after their marriage, would there be any will (he
would have been very young) or probate records?

Daniel LANTZ (died before 10 May 1824 and more likely, before 1820) according
to US Census records) married Margaret ----- and had the following children

4. Sophia LANTZ married George W DEVICMAN, 18 Sep 1827, Allegany Co., MD.
5. Clarissa LANTZ married George CATLETT, 3 Nov 1822, Allegany Co., MD.
Clarissa and George are buried in the Methodist Church cemetery in Old Town,

9. Juliana LANTZ married James D. ARMSTRONG, lived in Garrett Co., MD.
10. Susan Matilida married John Edmond OFFUTT, lived in Allegany Co., MD.
Clarissa LANTZ and George CATLETT are my 3rd great-grandparents. Seeking
identity of parents of Daniel LANTZ and identification of his wife's surname
and parents. A family group sheet on file with the NGS Library in Arlington,
VA suggests that Margaret was a KIMBERLY. Would like to hear from descendants
of Daniel and Margaret or from anyone having information that might determine
the origins of Daniel and Margaret. Can provide a list of descendants of this
couple to interested cousins. [ Web page at my site with further info:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/karon_bosze/dlantz.htm ]
George CATLETT's father, David, was born ca. 1753 in Prince William Co., VA
with close family ties in the lower Shenandoah Valley. There were LANTZ
families in the Shenandoah Valley, as well. Is Daniel connected to the VA
families or is he more likely connected to the PA families?

Howdy "fellow" Listers --
Questions of the Day:
How can I find messages that were posted before I joined the list? How can I
find messages that were posted while I was on vacation?
==================
Here ya go --
RootsWeb offers two ways to search the mailing list archives:
http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
(interactive search -- you provide the list name; it provides a way for you to
search by "keyword" and by the year of the archive).
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/
(threaded archive search -- you provide the list name; it provides a way for
you to view the archived messages in "threads" (message topics threaded
together by the replies and interactions of suceeeding messages) by month and
year.
I use both. I usually use the keyword approach first and when I've located a
message I then go to the threaded archive to view the "thread".

Does any of the below info look familiar to anyone? I finally found John
Catlett in Ripley County, Missouri. I've written for his inestate papers.
I will transcribe them and publish them at this location whenever I receive
them from the Ripley County, Missouri Courthouse. I've also asked for all
the other CATLETT info on any other CATLETT descendents in Ripley County,
Missouri. There are a few wills, I think.
I'm wondering if anyone out there has a match on John Catlett. He fought
for the union in the Civil War. I'm going to send for his papers soon. (as
soon as I can find a form to fill out!). I'm really wondering if there
might be a connection to anyone in Ohio for this family. Does anyone have a
John Catlett who moved with his family to Missouri?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
