I have made no effort to trace CATLETTs of African-American ancestry nor do I
recall having been contacted by any. While I don't like to generalize, I
would guess, based on research of some of my deep south lines, that it is very
probable that the J. Catlett, Jr. shown in your husband's Naval school
graduation book is probably a descendant of a Catlett slave. I don't have any
authoritative numbers, but suspect that many former slaves did not change
their surnames after the Civil War. On the other hand, it is possible that
this fellow's ancestors may have changed the family surname from something
else to "Catlett". I don't know. I guess no one else on the list has any
ideas, but if they do, I would encourage them to speak up.
I do know a "white" genealogist who has worked with African-American
researchers of the same surname (Eskridge, I believe) and their efforts (and
friendships) were shown in 1998 (?) on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Unfortunately,
I didn't get to see the show, so do not know from what angle the subject was
tackled. If you'd like to contact this genealogist, write me off-list and
I'll provide you an e-mail address.

Surname: Taliaferro
-------------------------
I am a descendant of Elizabeth Catlett and Francis Taliferro through their
son Zachariah. I can find no information as to who he married. I know he
had a son Richard who inherited Blenheim. If you know a name and a date
of their marriage I would appreciate it.
This is my line:
Robert Taliaferro m Sarah Grymes-- their son
Francis Taliaferro m Elizabeth Catlett-- their son
Zachariah Taliaferro m ????-- their son
Richard Taliaferro (inhertied Blenhilm) m Rose Berryman
I thought perhaps some one in this family could help me with the information
on Zachariah.
What a web the Catletts and the Taliferro's weave!!
Thank you

Shakels? From my husbands 1957 Naval Grad. Book Naval Training Center
Bainbridge,Md. listed is a J.Catlett Jr. He is African American. Could
this be indication that his ancestors were held in slavery? This fellow
was in Company 69 I have found Black decendants of (possible slavery) with
our own last name in Texas also and the lady was shocked I was willing to
talk about. Hope this helps someone in their search. Dorothy
Hi all -
Jay Nelson of La Crescenta, CA contacted me yesterday and today
(telephonically) about the possibility of a marriage between Joan (or Jean)
HOWELL (d/o William HOWELL, Sr.) and James CATLETT.
The Stubbs book shows James CATLETT (b. ca 1718, d. 25 Mar 1797-4 Sep 1797) as
being married to a "Jane". Jane, Joan, Jean -- all similar names. Very
plausible that "Jane" is the HOWELL mentioned in the query below (which I
posted on Genforum on 24 Sep 1998.
Joan CATLETT is named as a daughter and beneficiary in the 4 Aug 1747 will of
William HOWELL, probated 29 Dec 1747, Frederick Co., VA. Am assuming she was
married to a CATLETT. Which one?
Other children named in will:
Sons: Francis, William, and Thomas
Daughters: Grace and Mary
Bondsman: William HOWELL, Jr., Thomas ASHBY, and Samuel EARLE.
The latter two names are affiliated with the CATLETT, BUCK, and BLACKMORE
families of Frederick and Shenandoah Counties, VA.
[Source: J. Estelle Stewart King, ABSTRACTS OF WILLS, INVETORIES, AND
ADMINISTRAION ACCOUNTS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1743-1800, P. 4 -- no
reference to a will book is given].
Jay does not have Internet access, but he may be able to provide me his son's
e-mail address in the coming days. So, feel free to post messages related to
this subject here to the list. I'll forward replies to Jay via e-mail or
snail mail.
He's just started looking at CATLETTs in VA and this HOWELL connection. He
says that Joan was born between 1727 and 1731. One or more of the HOWELLs
from Frederick Co., VA moved/settled in the Mercer, McLean, Davis, and Hopkins
Cos. KY area and were associated with the ASHBY family (also formerly of
Frederick Co., VA and several known ASHBY-CATLETT asoociations there as
well). Apparently the HOWELL-CATLETT marriage is cited in a ASHBY family
history (2-vol. edition) by Lee Fleming (book out of print apparently).
Does anyone have any further info on these folks?

Dear CATLETT cousins and fellow list members -- I received the quoted e-mail
in early June and through a series of e-mail problems, I'd forgotten to reply
to the correspondent (Peter Meyler, not a subscriber to this list). I
received an unrelated "Catlett" phone call last night and that was the nudge I
needed to recall Peter's phone call to me and his subsequent e-mail:

Dear Ms Bosze,
I am working with an historical committee to republish a book called
Broken Shackles that was printed in 1889. In the book it mentions a
Captain Catlett. It does not mention a first name. His home was near
Winchester in Frederick County. The book indicates that Catlett lost all
of his property about three years after the completion of the war,
probably in 1818.
Do have you any records that would indicate which of the Catletts of
Frederick County may have been an officer during the War of 1812?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Regards,
Peter Meyler

Here's a report which I sent to Peter today and am hoping that someone on the
list might have further information on Cpt. Calmes CATLETT, including his
service during the War of 1812. As I recall, Peter's phone conversation
included information that "Captain Catlett" was in charge of guarding British
prisoners of war.
If you have further information, please reply to Peter and send a copy to the
list.
Thanks!
-- Karon

Completely understand your delima. It seems common for folks to just respond
they are not related when they have no idea if they are or not and don't
want to persue futher. Keep looking. My grandfather was half brother to a
George Catlett but I have not found him either. Also there was a
circumstance called common law marriag , I believe it still is in effect. In
fact I have found 7 children in one case (not Catlett) but the parents
carried the same name. All were born at home with midwives , none had SS
cards nor were they recorded until they attended a one room school house
which burnd. Sometime you scratch a long time. Also I found a Catlett whom I
spoke to on the phone who new nothing of my family. However I described an
old hospital his uncle had bought and converted to houseingthat I recalled
visiting when I was 5 yrs.old. He remembered the family reunion there and I
told him I had been there with my grandparents. He was surprised. So don't
be put off with some responses. Keep Looking. Good Luck. Dorothy

Have been to Sittingbourne, Co. Kent, U.K. searching for our roots during
July. Thought I found the home of our Catletts at Catt's Place, only to
be told that our John Catlett who came to America was not from that family.
The lady who lives at Catt's Place today said that her grandfather had
researched their family and the many other Catletts in the area are not
connected. She gave me the name of Mr. George Catlett, Elkham Hills Farm,
Frankfort, KY who I wrote. His letter was returned. Called another Catlett
today in Frankfort, and was told George Macklin Catlett died about 4 years
ago and that his widow lives in Lexington, KY. Wonder where his research
might be? Also, I can't seem to locate her on the internet. Help!!

I'm trying to prove that my gr.gr.grandfather, Hanson George Catlett was
the son of Horatio Gates and Molly ann catlett of Kentuchy. He was born
in MD in 1814-15, married to Eleanor Bayne from MD in 1832, and died
suddenly in 1854 in Austin, TX. They had three children; Emily, charles
W. and Hanson (Henry, Harry). He had a very colorful life while in TX as
a government surveyor, acquiring land also for the firm of Toombs,
Crawford and Catlett. These men were in politics in Georgia. Robert
Toombs father had married Sara Catlett. He also worked as an Indian
Agent with Major Robert S. Neighbors. He served in the army as a
volunteer during the Mexican War.
Can anyone identify with any of this?
