My name is Diana (CATLETT) DYE. I am brand new to genealogy and have very
little computer experience. My only resource has been online information. I
met up with Karon about a month ago and from her I have found what I have on
my CATLETT's.
My line goes from William CATLETT, to John CATLETT, to Basil CATLETT, to
Benjamin Franklin CATLETT, to James Edward CATLETT , to my father James
Franklin CATLETT . We are Frederick Co. Va. CATLETT's.
Obviously I want to know, like others of this line, about the line beyond
William.
I want to know of twins in ancestry, since I have a twin brother.
I have much interest in my grandfather's siblings. He was born abt 1878 and
had 7 siblings. I want confirmation of how a great uncle Holland CATLETT
died at an early age, and where a great uncle Sherman who married a BARNEY,
and a great-aunt Rose who married a STEELE ended up? I have found my
gggrandfather, Basil, on the 1850 census of Frederick Co., and the value of
property owned is listed as 800. Want to know of the property history.
I thank all who have posted information, I look forward to more.
Happy New Year,
Diana
I've been gathering info. on my husband's Catlett
line...here's what I have:
William (c1728-1788)>Robert
(1721-1803)>David>(1753-1834)>George (1793-
1854)>Margaret Ann Catlett (1823-1856). All in VA/KY/MD.
Much of what I have is from family researchers...I haven't
had time yet to do much original research...but thanks to my
sister-in-law and Karon and others I at least know where I
need to work...actually, the wives of the Catlett's are
proving to be very hard to trace.
Have you ever seen the name Cartledge/Catledge in your lineage material?

Whats Catlett-D?
My CATLETT line stops 1876 in MO, when Lee Roy
CATLETT was born, as per 1900 census Ripley
County MO. He married Alice PRICE, 1899 Ripley
County MO,and they are listed in the 1900 census.
FAmily rumor tells they had the following
children: Grace, Alice, Herbert Opa (or Opal),
Oral Lee and Raymond. I have info on Herb and
Oral Lee, but none of the other children. Cannot
find Lee Roy's parents, siblings, or even birth
place.
I'm new to this, and appreciate the efforts and
work of all who have much research and info on
Catletts!!
Alice

Hello everyone,
We currently have 46 subscribers to CATLETT-L and 10 subscribers to
CATLETT-D.
Many of you have never posted a message to the list. Why? Are y'all
just shy? (We don't bite). Intimidated? (Don't be). Busy? (We all
are). Know everything there is to know about the CATLETTs? (Share your
knowledge with the list). Don't know anything about your CATLETT?
(There's a collective wealth of knowledge on this list. TAP it!).
Let's play -- What's YOUR line? Here're the guidelines:
Subject Line: Your "end of line" CATLETT ancestor (or a CATLETT
puzzler, who's not necessarily an ancestor), last known residence, and
date.
Body of the message: It's ok to repeat the subject. Here are some
things you might consider putting in your message.
What do you want to know about the ancestor. (Parents, siblings,
descendants, occupation, military service).
What do you already know.
What have you already learned in your search.
Where did you search.
How confident are you in what you do know.
Also mention a little about yourself and your own level experience. All
members were "newbies" once! <s> (Some were even doing genealogy "BC"
(before computers)). What resources do you have nearby? (This doesn't
mean you're volunteering to do look-ups for instance, but remember that
much of genealogy is sharing, not taking. We've all been helped in one
way or another by others, give a little back).
I know this is a busy time of year, but ... I'm asking for 100%
participation. <G>
Happy Holidays to you all and happy hunting!

Looking for information on William Catlett born abt 1814 in NC. That's all I
know about his birth. I don't know exactly where or when he was born or who
his parents are. The next record of him is in Lauderdale Co., MS marrying
Louisa Culpepper in 1841. The Culpepper's had come from Jackson Co., GA just
a couple of years before. I've speculated he may have come with them. But
who know's!
Sorry, in all my ramblings, I forgot to answer the questions at hand.
The two lines I believe are fairly accurate are:
William Enders m. Mary Ann Catlett aft 12/21/1798 ( Robert, Robert, William,
David, Nicholas, John, John, John, John, John, John) as Karon would say,
there is murky water in this line, but...
John Moore m Rebecca Catlett abt. 1733 ( John, John, John, etc)
A possible third line, which was my original Catlett connection has been all
but disproved by Karon; that was the marriage of Jonathan Gibson and Margaret
Catlett in the late 1600s. Karon has shown that Jonathan instead married
Elizabeth Thornton in 1698.
I started the whole project in June of this year through the internet and a
baby book and memories of my grandmother and her wonderful stories of the
past in the South. Resources at hand are the Southern California Genealogical
Society Library in Burbank. It has a lot of information and LDS Family
History Center is near me also.
Thanks for the wake-up call and it looks like we'll have many challenges for
the New Year.
I was researching the wife of Jacob Enders and have determined it to be Lydia
Walters. In researching the Walters family, I came across a book "Six
Generations of LaRues and Allied Families" Otis M. Mather, 1921, that has
Catlett names; primarily Isaac Catlett who married Mary "Polly" Walters in
Hardin County, KY, March 17, 1825. They had 16 children. Hope this is of
interest to someone.
As I said to a new found cousin just this weekend, three months ago I never
heard of a Catlett. If asked to guess, I would have defined as part of a
ship. Now it seems everywhere I turn there is a Catlett popping up. I either
have two or three lines, depending on primary source verification. Thanks to
all of you for making this a most enjoyable detective game, much better than
any novel. Happy New Year to you all!
Harry Owen Martin
Got a bit of a full plate, eh Karon? I wanted to
take a moment to thank all of you for the
information you so freely share, and let you know
that I do appreciate all the effort it takes. I
hope you all have a happy holiday season, and a
wonderful new year!
Alice
Still looking for anything on Lee Roy CATLETT,
born 1880, MO. Married Alice PRICE 1899, Ripley
County, MO. Children of that marriage: Grace,
Alice, Herbert Opa ( Opal) Oral Lee and Raymond.

You haven't been dropped and as Alice pointed out, we got your message,
so it must be working. <G> I think it's *that* time of year.
If you're not too bashful, maybe you'd like to post a message showing
your CATLETT branch(es). In fact, I invite all of you who haven't
already posted to the list, to do so.
I've started two more documents with Old Rappahannock Co. abstractions,
but I'm also in the middle of holiday things and preparing for two rush
trips to Dixie before the 22nd, uncluttering my house so that I can be
packed for a move to FL in the spring, and trying to hold down a
full-time job.

Have I been dropped from the mailing list ? Perhaps folks are just busy with
Xmas and have not sent out anything recently ?

>From the Ancestry.com site:
Bibliography:
Wilkerson, Eva Eubank. Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex
Counties, Virginia, 1655-1900. Richmond, VA: Clearfield Company, 1953.
Does anyone on the list have experience with this book or is familiar
with this author's work?
Two entries in the book refer to Nicholas CATLETT:
Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia
page 164
: 1672,
: MATHEWS,
: ELIZABETH
: Daughter of Joanna, married Nicholas Catlett
Book: D 5,
Page: 48
page 172
: 1709,
: MOSELEY,
: BENJAMIN
: Married Elizabeth, relict of Nicholas Catlett
Book: D&C 13,
Page: 261
The first entry we've discussed. I have a hunch that the stated
document (Deed Book 5, p. 48) does NOT give Elizabeth's birth name as
"MATHEWS". Did Ms. Wilkerson presume it? Any MATTHEWS/MATHEWS
researchers on the list?
I also have concern about the second entry. This record from Deeds &
Will Book Book 13, was abstracted by John Frederick Dorman and he makes
no reference to the word "relict" (of anyone) when showing Elizabeth
(the wife of Benjamin MOSELEY) in his record. Stubbs, I believe showed
her as Elizabeth THOMPSON. This is supported by a court record
reposited with the Virginia Historical Society, in which the descendants
and legatees of Benjamin MOSELEY and wife Elizabeth are fairly well
documented. Elizabeth was the daughter of William THOMPSON. She
married first William CATLETT (youngest son of the immigrant Col. John
CATLETT). He died ca. 1699 leaving his property to his unborn child.
That child was born after his death and named Elizabeth CATLETT. Her
mother, Elizabeth Thompson (Catlett) in turn married Benjamin MOSELEY.
They had a child or two (don't remember how many or who at this point).
Elizabeth Catlett (the daughter) never married. The Sparacios did not
abstract this particular Essex Co. record, as Fred Dorman had already
done that. So, that leaves us with this silly little record of Ms.
Wilkerson's, which names Elizabeth as relict of Nicholas.
Anyone have any experience with other records in the book? Any
TALIAFERRO researchers here with experience with entries in Wilkerson's
book relative to that family?
Anyone on the list who has ready access to the Essex Co. records? Any
volunteers who would like to take a look? <s>
