If anyone desires a photocopy of the Stubbs book: A HISTORY OF TWO
VIRGINIA FAMILIES FROM COUNTY KENT, ENGLAND, I'll get copies made and
make available at cost (copying, postage, envelope). There are 94 or 95
pages (2 book pages per photocopy page). This will include the latter
half of the book (BAYTOP family), plus the index. I haven't had any
bulk photocopying done in quite awhile so not sure what the going per
page rate is.
If you're interested, write me PRIVATELY (NOT to the list, please).

Morning everyone, I was reading through a book that my
cousin Cynthia Elledge Snider wrote and published in 1985,
and was looking through Catlett names in there. The Catlett
first names listed are the following:
Alice, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Elizabeth Gaines, Elizabeth
Underwood, John, John, Jr., John II, John IV, Judith,
Margaret, Martha Thornton, Mary, Mary Grason, Nicholas,
Rebecca, Reuben, Sarah, Thomas and William.
If anyone would like for me to lookup any information that
is written in here, I would be glad to do so, just give me a
little time to do so. Thanks Tudie

The sources I depend on for information about the Kent Catletts are the two
books written by David A. Avant, Jr., "Some Southern Colonial Families Vol
1." Published by L'Avant Studios in 1983. See chapter 5, pages 170 though
176. The second book is "Some Southern Colonial Families, Vol, 3" published
by L'Avant Studios in 1989. See Chapter 2, pages 41 through 111.
Mr. Avant went to a great amount of effort to track down Catlett Kentish
documents and presents them very clearly in his books. I used Avant's
research pretty much exclusively for the Kentish Catletts I posted on my
WebPage. From about 1650 to 1800 I used Stubbs with a great bit of
caution. Sometimes working with the Stubbs pedigrees feels like I'm
walking on quicksand!! I have yet to dig into Stubbs because I am still
trying to tie my Isaac Catlett into >any< Virginia Catlett Family (some day
<fingers crossed>).

I suspect everyone else is like me, hoping that someone will answer you.
Trouble is that we're all in about the same boat. Dr. & Mrs. William
Carter Stubbs, "A History of Two Virginia Families" published in 1918 shows
Robert Catlett as born in Virginia in 1721. Most estimates for his
marriage to Mary Ann Floyd are about 1745-1747 based on the oldest
documented child (Capt. John Catlett, b. 1749). The marriage was probably
in Va. He apparently did not leave a will as his estate went through
appraisal and sales as reported 2 Jane 1804 in Frederick Co., Va.
According to information I have, Mary Ann is the daughter of Henry and Mary
(Bruce) Floyd. I have that Henry was b. ca. 1673 in Wales and died ca.
1776 in Fauquier Co, VA. Henry and Mary also had a son, Henry (and
possibly other children).
The information in the Stubbs book for Robert and his ancestry has been
questioned and has been the subject of quite a few of those on here. If
you have any additional information, please post it for the rest of us to
have.

I believe Mr. Cullerton's (of London) may have intended to say Col. John was
apparently a "descendant" of Hugh de Catte, as he was an owner of "Catts
Place" way before the 15th century. According to 'The History of County
Kent, England', printed by Harris in 1917, "The mansion was anciently the
residence of Hugh de Catte, from whom it acquired its name. His descendants
continued to possess it until the Reign of Henry VI (1442)." (Vol. III,
page 223).
There are many Catlett researchers who have shown that Col. John's parents
were John CATLETT, ye younger (b.1599 in Sittingbourne, Kent Co., England;
d. 1621-1625, Bettersden, Kent Co., England) and Sarah HAWKINS (b.1602-1604,
England) who were married April 10, 1623 in Preston, near Faversham, Kent,
England.
> The Catletts were members of the St. Michaels Episcopal Church in

As there were many CATLETT families in England and in the SE part where
Sittingbourne is located, St. Michaels Episcopal Church could have been
where some of them attended. However, just a few miles from Catts Place is
the Bearsted Church mentioned in Dr. Stubbs book when he mentions that in
"1499 John Catlott bequests 20s. to the reparation of the steeple of
Bearsted Church." The church has a tower & not a steeple and a guide book I
have about the church says the tower was built in the 15th century, so maybe
the tower is what was referred to as the steeple of the church. Even in Dr.
Stubbs' book is referenced a letter by Leo CULLERTON (maybe the same as from
Edna's source) in which it mentions "a transcript of Marriages at All
Saints' Maidstone (Kent), 1542-1754. I suppose the Catlett families
attended several churches in the area.

The following information was complied by Sgd.Leo Cullerton-92 Picadilly London W. 29 Sept 1910. It was sent to my Aunt who was having the family researched.
Hugh DeCatt of France was with Wm the Copnquer in England. The French version of the name Catelot appears in Picardy France on an accient French Map.
Hugh DeCatt settled in Kent Co, England. His place was known as Catt's lot from which the name Catlett evolved.
Col. John Catlett was apparently the son of Hugh, immigrated to the Virginia Colony in 1650 with two half brothers and his son Nicholas. He settled on the Rappahannock River about 18 mi above Tappahonnock.
Col. John Catlett, with a Franciscian Monk, Francis Lederer and several English horseman and Indian guides made the first exploration toward the West into what is now known as the Pedimont and the Shenandoah Valley.
The Catletts were members of the St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Sittingbourne, England. Col John was scalped by the Indians while doing his part in defending the Ft at Port Royal,Va in 1670.
Later descendents of Catletts settled in Faquair, Co near Warrenton, Va. They named the estate Green Hill after the original Catlett estate in Caroline, Va Still later Catlett's moved into Laudoun, Co Va and into Montgomery Co, Maryland. From there Alexander, Mary Catherine's great-great-grand-father went to Ky settling in Catlettsbury, Ky
Interesting and hopefully correct.

The letter I've transcribed here was postmarked, 19 Nov 1887, Marshall,
Missouri and addressed to Miss Bette M Blackwood, Berkeley Springs, West
Virginia, Morgan Co. It was written by her uncle, Daniel Morgan

of William Jackson BLACKWOOD and Maria Louisa Dorothy CATLETT). I
recived the copy of this letter from my cousin, Virginia Shuyler,

Hi Pam and Tudie --
Hope you don't mind my posting this to the list.
I'm taking a look at Alexander's & Susannah's records today. Have to
start cleaning up these piles (loose definition there!) around here and
figured I'd start with the packet that Tudie sent me nearly 2 years
ago. This of course is leading me to drag out books that I'd actually
reshelved recently. <G>

I don't have the Fiedler BEALL book, but I do have the SCHARF book.
Signficant point here. BEALL seems to have misinterpreted this part of
the book regarding th 2 Aug 1766 date. (Tudie, I'm certain I quoted
this passage to you (1 Feb 98), so this is probably "old" info for you).

was recorded a conveyance from Ninian BEALL to Benjamin EDWARDS and his
wife Margaret for 429 acres of resurvey on Gravelly Ridge and 271 acres
of resurvey on Rich Meadows. The considerations in these three deeds
were the grantees being the daughters and sons-in-law of the grantor.

The 2 Aug 1766 date comes from the sentence above "my" quote and refers
to a deed of indenture between two others and the patent date on _that_
property was 2 Aug 1766. This deed has nothing to do with Alexander and
Susannah.
This 12 Aug 1777 date does show Alexander and Susannah with an earlier
marriage date than I had previously seen in records (1778 Fauquier Co.,
VA probate record). John Christensen shows a "before 1776" marriage
date on his Web site.

William Catlett (b?) who married Elizabeth Farber. His father was John
Catlett (b 1768) m Elizabeth?
Also, this William apparently married (2nd) to Melissa Ellen Tate (b 1855).
Another piece of information possibly surrounding part of this family was:

boy named William Juit Catlett was raised by a family named Triplett."
William Catlett (1st marriage) to Hannah Starr was married 21 May 1857 in
Noble Co. OH. Hannah was the daughter of John Starr of OH.
Children of William Catlett and Hannah were:

Alexander and Susannah were married by 1778 (when Alexander inherited
have of his father's 358-acre tract of land).
Alexander makes a certificate, dated 1 Nov 1788, certifying that he
didn't import slaves into VA from the West Indies.
In Albemarle Co., VA 17 Jan 1797, Alexander "swore" to the information
contained in the 1788 certificate.
Alexander and Susannah were in Mason Co., KY by 16 Sep 1800. (Date of
deed in Berkeley Co., VA). Note that "Mongolia Co., state of Maryland"
doesn't exist. There is a Monongalia Co., WV (was VA at that time). It
is west of the MD panhandle (Garrett & Allegany Co., MD) and borders a
couple counties in PA.
Alexander and Phebe appear as a married couple by 27 Jan 1801.
In 1814, Alexander applied for a marriage bond to marry Mary HAY.
Tudie & John, what are the dates in MD that tie Alexander to Susannah,
and the estate of Ninian BEALL?
How many Alexanders are we dealing with here?
