My brother and I have been researching MOORE, RAMEY, and PENIX, and have recently
discovered a fascinating connection to the CATHEY family. However, we have encountered a
conflicting issue concerning the parents of Ann CATHEY who married Joshua PENIX on 15 July
1784 in Rowan Co. NC. (Joshua PENIX later moved to Russell and Scott Co. VA. where our
other lines join in.)
We were given an undocumented file that lists Ann CATHEY's parents as John CATHEY and
Mary IRWIN.
Ann is listed as Mary Ann CATHEY, b. 1765 in NC
Ann's father John CATHEY is listed as b. 1739 in PA, d. 1824 in Maury, TN
Ann's mother Mary IRWIN is listed as b. 1738 in Chester, PA.
Mary IRWIN and John CATHEY were married in 1758 in Rowan Co. NC
John CATHEY is also listed as the son of Alexander CATHEY and Mary PINKNEY.
The children of John CATHEY and Mary IRWIN are:
1. Mary Ann, b. 1765, NC (married Joshua PENIX)
2. James, b. 1759
3. Jean, b. 1761
4. Agnes, b. 1763
5. William, b. 1766
6. Hugh, b. 1768
7. John, b. 1770
A different conflicting file we have on John CATHEY indicates he married Jean (unknown)
and had these children:
1. James, b. 1740 in Ulster, IRE
2. Jean, b. 1744 in Augusta Co. VA
3. Hugh, b. in Rowan Co. NC
4. John, b. 1750/64 in Rowan
5. William, b. 1750/64 in Rowan
6. Agness, (married William Penick)
7. Ann, (married Joshua Penix)
These two files seem to match in terms of family names, but in addition to showing a
different wife for John, the children's dates are off by many years!
We are hoping to determine who actually were the parents of Ann CATHEY who married Joshua
PENIX. Can any CATHEY researchers help us resolve this issue? We would appreciate any
corrections, help, or suggestions you can send our way!
Best wishes...
Phillip Moore
