Lucille--
In response to your question (a commonly asked one, by the way), all
Rootsweb lists (of which the Cathey list is one) are available to be
subscribed in either digest mode or list mode. Regardless of which you
are on, you get the same information. Here are the differences in
presentation:
1) Mail Mode: When subscribed in the list mode, as a listmember you
receive each message individually as it is sent to the Cathey list. The
advantages to this mode are: (1) you receive the message immediately
when sent, and (2) you can easily "file" the messages of interest into
different email file folders (such as Cathey--TN, Cathey--NC, etc.) for
easier reference and retrieval later. Also, you can easily delete the
messages you aren't interested in. The disadvantage to being in the
list mode is that your in-box fills up more quickly. This is especially
true of lists with heavy traffic, such as Roots-L.
2) Digest Mode: When subscribed in the digest mode, as a listmember you
receive the very same messages as those subscribed in mail mode;
however, you receive them all in one email. The "table of contents" at
the beginning of each digest looks like this (except for the way my
email program wraps line):

Then what would follow is each message in its entirety. The advantage
to this digest mode is that your in-box doesn't fill up as fast (the
above digest would have been one email item; in the mail mode you would
have received 9 separate messages since there are 9 messages indicated).
For people on a large number of lists or who don't check email
regularly, this can be helpful for browsing.
The disadvantage is that if you are interested in just one of the
messages listed in the digest, you have to save the whole digest (or cut
and paste the pertinent message to your word processing program). Also
you don't get the digest immediately as individual messages are sent. I
presently have the digest mode set to send out a digest every 18 hours
(assuming someone has posted something to the list) or every 32768 bytes
(size/length of digest)--whichever comes first.
To date we have 41 mail mode subscribers and 13 digest subscribers to
the Cathey list--a total of 54. (Actually we have 52 researchers
subscribed--two of us are subscribed in both mail and digest modes.)
By the way Lucille, you are currently subscribed in mail mode. If you
prefer to be in the digest mode for our list, let me know and I will be
happy to switch you. (For the current level of traffic on our list,
however, there probably isn't a great advantage at the present time to
be subscribed in digest mode.)
