Subject: [CATHEY] Searching for Another William Cathey
I saw a couple of notes about William Cathey, but unfortunately I don't
think that they were the one that I was looking for. So, I will add my two
cents.
I am looking for William Cathey (b. unknown but likely before 1680. d.
December 1751 in Augusta County, VA). He had a brother John (nothing more
is
known).
William had a daughter Sarah (b. 1696)
Sarah Cathey married Samuel Given (1680 - 1740) in 1718 in Ireland.
>From there I trace the children of Samuel and Sarah (Cathey) Given.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks for the help.
Mark
Mark Shives:
I should read the previous posting but am going to provide what I can
readily come up with. I don't recognize the William Cathey born before 1680
& died 1751 in Augusta Co., VA.
There was a William Cathey b. circa 1712 who received one of the earliest
Beverly Manor grants. He never married and he died circa 1746. At the time
of his death his brother John was living in Ulster (N. Ireland). John and
his wife came to Virginia, sold the land William left him and moved to NC
where the other Catheys had migrated.
There were two Cathey brothers in Pennsylvania (John & James). John died in
PA and his son Alexander migrated to Anson Co. NC - now Rowan Co. (perhaps
was in VA briefly). James was in VA for some time then moved to NC also in
Anson (later Rowan). It is possible that their father was in America;
however no clue uncovered as of now.
The John and James had a sister Sarah Cathey who married Samuel Givens.
After the premature death of Samuel Givens, she married Robert Allen and had
one child (a son) by him.
the 1785 family count for Shenandoah County, VA shows:
Whites Dwellings Other (slaves?)
William Cathey Sr. 5 1 2
William Cathey Jr. 11 1 6
the 1787 tax list for Shenandoah Co., VA shows:
William Cathey Sr. 4 slaves > 16 5 horses 22 cattle
William Cathey Jr. 5 slaves >16 4 slaves <16 1 wh. male 10 horses
12 cattle
William Sr. had a son George 1775-1835 who died Wiliamson Co., TN
William Sr. had a daughter Elizabeth who married Capt. John Sehorn (they
left VA for TN)
Can provide additional data after this is digested.
