Margaret:
One little item right away!
Thomas Burnette (RN=5522) served in the Confederate Army under General J.W.
Frazer who led the battle at Cumberland Gap. Tom was captured and asked to
remain in Cumberland Gap to care for George W. Cathey, a relative by
marriage and another resident of Haywood County, NC. George was very ill
with dysentery along with other soldiers. After George Cathey's death and
burial at Cumberland Gap, Tom was taken to Camp Douglas (Chicago) where the
other Haywood County prisoners were taken earlier.
During Tom's late years, he lived with Rev. Erwin. Rev. Erwin conducted
Tom's funeral in Haywood County in 1929. As part of the funeral, Rev. Erwin
mentioned how Tom had volunteered to remain in Cumberland Gap and care for
the dying George Cathey who was Rev. Erwin's grandfather.
Ref. Letter dated 18 July 1959 from Rev. Erwin to F.A. (Dick) Cathey, Jr.

Subject: [CATHEY] Newsletter
I had a brief correspondence with you last year. Recently, I have
been
reading a lot about the newsletter, and am quite interested in receiving it.
About 20 years ago I also corresponded with Dick Cathey, and he sent me some
copies of newsletters about the reunion from the 1950's. This was my first
info about the family. He also included a letter from the pastor who had
conducted my grandfather's funeral (Tom Burnette - wife of Rebecca Cathey,
daughter of Thomas. He had written some very interesting items of the Civil
war. So I am very interested in this year's newsletter because of that and
the information you plan on Ulster - where we visited in 1994, before I had
the information that Cathey's were from that area. I thought it was only my
Bryson ancestors.
This is a rambling note so far, but I would like to receive the
newsletter.
Address is: Margaret Hannemann
29312 Cool Creek Dr.
Sun City, CA 92586
Will be happy to send the money to the reunion expenses.
Thanks!
