The following is transcribed from the original typed historical account of Cathey's
Creek Church of Christ , written by A.B. Cathey of Isom, Tennessee, and Published on March
12, 1903 in "The Gospel Advocate".
_______
By request, an historical sketch of this church is written for publication by the Gospel
Advocate. It will doubtless prove interesting to those who are at present members here, to
those who have emigrated to other sections and to all who desire to learn such facts as
may be given concerning the good bretheren whose preaching we have enjoyed.
_
This is one of the oldest congregations in Maury Co. dating back eighty years or more. The
writer remembers hearing preachers here for the last seventy years. He is informed that a
brother named Kinkade, who lived in Bedford Co. Tenn., held a meeting under a brush arbor
at the place where the road leaves the creek and that Mrs. Alice Cathey was baptized
during that meeting. She died in 1822. A brother named Hill probably preached here about
date. Bro. Nichols who lived near Mt. Pleasant, in Maury Co. was one of the early
preachers here. Dr. James N. Brown preached here about seventy years ago. He was a
Physician a school teacher and a farmer. He emigrated to Ark. where he died. Bretheren
W.M.R. Wooten and C.F.R. Shehane preached here when they were young men. The former
settled in Davidson Co. Tn., and died not many years ago.
The latter wrote and published some poems some of which perhaps non existant. He went to
S.C. where it is said he joined the Universalists. Bro. Ephraim R. Osborne came to
Columbia, Tn. from Ky., in 1836 and he preached in the surrounding country about twenty
years. He then went to Union City, Tenn., where he died at an advanced age. He was a very
pleasant speaker on his oratorical powers secured large audiences at his appointments.
Bro. J.K. Speer was one of the early preachers, he had great power as a reasoner and his
preaching embraced a period of more than 20 years, beginning about 1830. In 1850 or
thereabout he moved to Lawrence Co., Tenn., where he died. Bro. Wm. Gooch was contemporary
with Bro. Speer. He held a debate with a Mormon at Dunlap, Hickman Co., Tenn.,. The debate
was largely attended. He baptized the writer in October 1844. Bro. James Anderson held
debates with Wm. Ralston a Cumberland Presbyterian preacher, abt., 60 years ago. Bro.
Anderson lived in Willia!
mson Co., Tenn and was the father of Bro. Wm. Anderson now of the Nashville Bible
School.
Among the early male members of the church here that I remember were Alexander Cathey, A.
James Cathey, Wm. Cathey, Griffith Cathey, James Cathey, Matthew B.Cathey, Tom Brown,
Joseph Brown, Robert L. Brown, James Whiteside, Alexander Cathey, Wm. Cathey, Matthew B.
Cathey moved in 1836 to Miss. and settled near Thyatira, Tate Co. at which place there is
now a large congregation.
Up to the time of the Civil War, the church here did not meet for worship except on
occasions when there were appointments for preaching. Soon after the close of the war the
brethren built a new meeting house and since, they have met regularly for worship on the
Lord's day. Protracted meetings have been held, at which many of our brethren of good
talent have labored. New houses of worship have been built at several points near this
place, one at Kettle Hills, one at Dry Fork, one at South Point and one is now being built
on Curry's Branch. As a consequence the number of members here is not as large as it
was before the establishment of these churches.
Bro. S.A. Worly and John A. Goodman are active elders in the teaching on Lord's Day
and the other elders E. Jones, Dr. John C. Cummis and C.R. Whiteside look after the
financial matters, the employment of preachers and the general welfare of the church.
