Allan,
The earlier generations of the CATHEY family in America are well-researched
and documented. One major source for the Cathey family is: Cathey Family
History and Genealogy Volume I (1700-1900) by Boyt Henderson Cathey, 1993.
(I'm copying Boyt, in case he may have something readily available on
"your"
line, as given below). Also, the Cathey list may connect you to some close kin.
There were a couple of Cathey families in Maury/Lewis and Marshall County,
Tenn. "My" branch came to Maury/Lewis County, TN, from Rowan County, NC, to
claim a Rev War land grant belonging to William Cathey:
Edna Cathey Trotter writes that William Cathey (1747-1799) was a Major
during the American Revolution and afterward a civil officer in Salisbury, NC. As
a result of this service, he was given grants of land in what is now
Tennessee. He and his brothers, who also had land grants, moved overland to the
present site of Nashville, TN with Gen. James Robertson. The Catheys owned land
in Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, and Sumner Counties. He died in Sumner
County, TN, and is buried there. After his death, his widow and his sons
claimed the grant_[1]_ (aoldb://mail/write/template.htm#_ftn1) of 4,000 acres
of land on what is now known as Cathey’s Creek in Maury County, TN, named for
William Cathey.
From William, "my" direct line is James Alexander Cathey
(1782-1832);
Alexander B. Cathey (1826-1916); William Alexander Cathey
(1861-1942); Bessie
Cathey Bostick (1890-1961); etc. Several of the Maury County, TN, Cathey migrated
to Texas, Missouri, and elsewhere.
I am not familiar with a branch that may have come to Tennessee via Kentucky
(from your note, below); perhaps some of the other folk on the Cathey list
may be able to help.
Regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I am researching the Catheys in Maury during the first
half of the 1800's. I am related to Mitchell's and Wrenn's in the Santa Fe
area (Duck River) and Mt Pleasant areas.
During my research, I have found three connections with the Cathey's. There
are two Mitchell marriages and one Land Deed transfer from a Wrenn.
A marriage between George W. Mitchell (his second) and Jane W. Cathey about
1820 in probably Maury, Tenn. She is later shown as born 1798 in Ky, and died
Moultrie, IL. Do you know who her parents are?
The first marriage of George W. Mitchell is believed to be to ? Anderson.
One son of this marriage was David Mitchell who married Minerva Jane Cathey who
was born 1814 in Ky and died Moultrie, IL. I believe her parents were John
and Nancy Cathey?
There is a Land Deed transfer from Thomas Wren to John Cathey. Do you know
of any relations between Wren's and the Cathey's?
I have seen Alexander Cathey in the census. Can you clarify Alexander's
relationship with the other Cathey Families?
Any help is welcome........Allan
