course of her study on the Neill family.]
For some reason, I come up with 3 more children of Capt. George Cathey
than Marty posted. At the end of this lawsuit I've constructed my
interpretation of George Cathey's family. Am I overlooking something?
Something must be off in that I doubt he would have two daughters named
Mary and two daughters named Betsy. Any insights here appreciated!
(Plus, the transcipt is all I have--I don't have the actual document, so
perhaps something was misinterpreted there.)
The George Cathey who is the defendant in this lawsuit is the son of
(then-deceased) Capt. George Cathey and wife Ann Price. An outline of
the stated family relationships in this document for both the Neill and
Cathey families appears at the end of this message. Note that two
daughters of Capt. George Cathey (Ann and Mary) were married to two sons
of Capt. William Neill (Alexander and Andrew).

I'm forwarding a message that was intended for the list. My response,
then the forwared message, follows.
Constance, thanks for writing--I wish I could be of help.
Unfortunately, I have not encountered Lockes in my research. However, I
do know that Lockes appear on Marty Grant's Cathey web page (although it
is an Alice who is married to a Locke). Also Marty has a list of Cathey
researchers on his page, some of whom are from the Brandon/Cathey line.
Perhaps they could be of assistance. Also, I know that some subscribers
on the list are of Brandon descent.
[Marty's web site is at http://www.martygrant.com/gen/cathey.htm ]
As for Capt. George Cathey's dau., Ann, she was married to Alexander
Neill. I recall some speculation years ago by a researcher that Ann
Cathey may have been previously married to (as I recall) a Moore.
Alexander Neill died in 1827 in Marshall Co., TN and his widow Ann
Cathey Neill died in 1852 in Marshall Co.
Also, I have not ever encountered an Obedience Cathey; that is rather
unusual for a Cathey given name as usually early on there is frequently
Quaker roots with this type of name. To my knowledge the Catheys were
consistently Presbyterian.
One last question: Where in TN did Robert Locke (m. Ann Cathey) own
land?
Please do keep us posted on any new information/developments.

Hi Donna- You say that George Cathey was in Mecklenburg and was a Rev.
War soldier. His daughter Ann Cathey could have been born around 1775
to 1785 or so. I have been looking for Ann Cathey who married Robert
Locke (son of Gen. Matthew Locke and Mary Brandon) who was born 15 Feb.
1775. I can find nothing on my Ann Cathey--but yours would be about the
right age and in the right place. In the last week, I have received
messages online that Robert Locke's wife was Obedience Cathey. That is
a name you would remember if you had heard it.
Robert Locke(born and died in Rowan Co. but had land in Tennessee) died
in 1818. His will mentions 3 young children but no wife so I assume she
had already died. Guardians were appointed for his children.
Do any Cathey Listers know anything about any of these people? Thanks
and good luck to each of you. Constance
Hi,
According to Boyt Cathey's book Elias C. Cathey Sr. b.1802 or 1803 at S.
Carolina married Sarah (Sallie) Turner before 1832 no. of children 10
Margaret, Neely, James W., William H., Barbara Ann, Sarah E., John A.,
Nicholas Sandlin, Lydia Eliza, and Elias Cathey Jr.
Elias C. Cathey was born and reared in S.C. where he met and married Sarah
(Sally) Turner and had their first child, Margaret, who was born about 1831.
By 1833, Elias and Sally were in Ga. where Neely was born. Seven additional
children were born in Al. The 1850 Walker Co. Al. , census shows 10 children
ranging in age 1 to 18 yrs. Elias was a farmer, age 47 years. The 1850
census shows a Margaret Cathey, age 79, who is thought to be Elias' mother.
This person was born in S.C. about 1770.
At the age of about 50 yrs. Elias moved his family by wagon train to Yell
County, Ark settling in Rover which is located in a valley of the Ouachita
mountains. Elias was one of the pioneer settlers of this area.
After the death of their son, James in the Civil War, they raised his
children. Many of Elias' decendants now liver in Rover. Elias and Sally
lived out their lives in Rover and were shown in the 1880 census (Info from
Cathey Family history & Genealogy pg.280. Writer Boyt Cathey)

I don't want to muddy the waters, but one of my ancestors, Sarah Cathey
married Samuel Givens, Sr. about 1718 in Ulster, Antrim, Ireland. She
died in Virginia (probably Orange County) between 1765-1769. I
collected the information from other researchers. Maybe parts of the
line can be found in Orange County Virginia. Just a thought. If you
know anything about my Sarah Cathey, please let me know. I don't know
anything else, just the information I just gave you.

Philip--
Regarding our previous discussion about Capt. George Cathey who left
Mecklenburg Co., NC to stake out new land in Middle TN in what is now
Marshall Co. (thanks, Bill Timmons, for correcting me about the
Rutherford Co. part--I should have known that!)--we have a problem we
need to iron out.
First of all, the good news: Neill researchers have proof as to the
parentage of the Margaret ("Peggy") Neill (b. ca. 1793) who was the wife
of your George Cathey (more on this in another message). Margaret Neill
is (absolutely, postively) the daughter of Alexander Neill and his wife,
Ann Cathey (dau. of Capt. George Cathey and wife Ann Price).
The bad news: We're looking for proof as to the identity of Margaret
Neill's husband--George Cathey. It is traditionally stated (as also
appears in the Cathey book) that he is the son of Capt. George Cathey
and wife Ann Price. And, yes, this couple did have a son named George
Cathey.
HOWEVER--here's the problem I have with that statement: How could
George Cathey (son of Capt. George and Ann Cathey Neill) be married to
his *niece* (i.e., his sister Ann's daughter)?
<Philip Sheppard>:
>
> I only had another son, and yes, his name was George, too. This George (jr.)
> married Margaret Neill, maybe a sister to Alexander(?).
As Marty Grant just now posted, Capt. George and Ann (Price) Cathey had
another son: William Cathey. The list of children for this couple
comes from a detailed 1823 lawsuit in Wilson Co., TN where Robert Neill
(brother of Alexander Neill) sued George Cathey (son of Capt. George
Cathey). In this lawsuit (a transcribed copy of which I will next post
to the list), William Cathey (son of Capt. George Cathey) was already
deceased, so his children are named. One William's children is George
Cathey. I'm wondering if this could possibly be the George Cathey who
married Margaret Neill.
Also, bear in mind that Marshall Co., TN sources show that George Cathey
(m. Margaret Neill) was b. 16 Oct 1784. In 1784, Capt. George Cathey
would have been about 49 years old. He could have been old enough to be
the grandfather (as opposed to father) of this younger
George--especially if son William is one of Capt. George's older
children. Also, William Cathey's son George would have been a first
cousin to(his wife??) Margaret Neill. First cousins marrying would
have been allowed by law--as opposed to an uncle/niece marriage (I do
not claim to be an authority on TN marriage law, but I know uncle/niece
marriages are expressly forbidden under GA and other state laws).
One other thing I need to go back and locate in my records--there is a
power of attorney executed by John Reed (m. Esther Cathey) who was the
son-in-law of Capt. George Cathey. John Reed grants power of attorney
to his "trusty friend" George Cathey of Missouri. Do you have anything
on these Missouri Catheys who obviously have ties to the Marshall Co.,
TN group? It is my understanding from descendants of George Cathey and
wife Margaret Neill that George is buried in Marshall Co. (Some years
ago--early 1990s--I was corresponding with Joe Huddleston of Washington
state who descends from this couple. I've not been in touch with Joe
since that time.)
Following is the family group of Alexander Neill and wife Ann Cathey. I
have the family group of their dau., Margaret Neill (m. George Cathey),
listed afterward. For anyone interested in these Neills, I would
recommend viewing the web page of Marcy Porter at
http://www.geocities.com/~mpor
Marcy is not a Cathey descendant; her line is through Robert Neill (of
lawsuit fame), brother to Alexander Neill. Marcy is compiling a detailed
genealogy of four generations of Neills in requirement for the Certified
Genealogist designation.
Here is the family of Alexander Neill and wife Ann Cathey:
10. Alexander NEILL was born in Rowan County, North Carolina
ABT 1767. Alexander died 1827 in Marshall County, Tennessee, at age 60.
He was the son of Capt. William Neill (Rev. War) and his wife Mary
Clinton of Chester Co., PA and Rowan and Burke Counties., NC (William
and Mary were married 3 May 1750 in New Castle County, Delaware).
He married Ann CATHEY ca. 1792 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Ann was born about 1775. Ann was the daughter of George CATHEY and Ann
PRICE. Ann died 1852 in Marshall County, Tennessee, at age 77.
Alexander NEILL and Ann CATHEY had the following children:
+ 63 i. Margaret (Peggy)3 NEILL was born about 1793.
[Note: This is the Margaret NEILL who married
George CATHEY. See more on this couple at end of
message.]
+ 64 ii. Mary (Jane) NEILL was born about 1795. Mary died about 1830.
She married John ORR date unknown. John was born 14 May 1792.
John died 22 August 1879 in Verona, Franklin County,
Tennessee, at age 87.
[Note: I suspect these Orrs were from Rowan/Meck. Cos, NC;
The grandfather of my Elizabeth Harriet (Erwin) Neill was
William Orr, Rev. soldier, of these counties.]
+ 65 iii. George Cathey NEILL was born 15 December 1798.
[Note: This is my direct line. George Cathey NEILL married
Elizabeth Harriet Erwin. Her Erwin/Bishop parents moved
to Rutherford Co., TN ca. 1804 from Mecklenburg Co, NC.]
66 iv. Esther Emma NEILL was born about 1800. Esther died about 1840
at age unknown. She married Robert M WALKER date unknown. Robert was
born ABT. 1800.
+ 67 v. Algeline Louise (Lennie) NEILL was born about 1803.

Regarding Margaret ("Peggy") NEILL (dau. of Alexander Neill and wife Ann
Cathey) who married George CATHEY:
Margaret (Peggy)3 NEILL (Alexander2, William1) was born in Burke County,
North Carolina about 1793. Margaret died 24 August 1853 in Lewisburg,
Marshall County, Tennessee, at age 60.
She married George CATHEY 23 December 1812 in Bedford County, Tennessee.
George was born 16 October 1784. George died 3 December 1866 in
Lewisburg, Marshall County, Tennessee, at age 82.
Margaret (Peggy) NEILL and George CATHEY had the following children:
+ 205 i. Mary A. (Polly)4 CATHEY was born 12 September 1813.
[born in Bedford County, Tennessee; Mary died 22 June 1855 in
Marshall County, Tennessee, at age 41.
She married twice. She married Dr James BISHOP 6 December
1832. She married John LAWS 12 May 1838 in Marshall
County, Tennessee.]
[Note: I'm interested in this James Bishop, as I believe
that he is descended from Henry Bishop, who is the uncle
of my Elizabeth Harriet (Erwin) Neill.]
+ 206 ii. Esther E. CATHEY was born about 1815.
[She was born in Bedford County, Tennessee; She married
Samuel B APPELBY 15 May 1847. Samuel was born 1808 in
Tennessee.]
207 iii. Sarah Adaline CATHEY was born in Bedford County, Tennessee
19 September 1818. Sarah died 20 November 1901 in Bedford
County, Tennessee, at age 83.
+ 208 iv. Matilda Ann CATHEY was born 25 June 1820.
[She was b. was born in Bedford County, Tennessee. Matilda died
22 October 1872 at age 52. She married William A. HOUSTON

212 viii. Emma CATHEY was born in Bedford County, Tennessee about
1826.

Donna & Philip, this may complicate your search but I need to raise another
puzzle that may affect your thinking about Captain George Cathey of
Bedford/Marshall Co TN. My line is James>John>Hugh>John. Hugh married Jane
Bailey in 1774 and left Rowan Co NC about 1785 for KY. After moving around a
bit he settled in Logan Co KY where his son, John, appears and married Nancy
Bailey (probably a cousin). By 1810 Hugh is in Bedford Co TN as one of the
first members of the Bethberel Presbyterian Church. I believe John and Esther
Reed may have lived a time in Logan Co KY and certainly John Neill related to
the Bedford family did. On 28 Sep 1812 Bedford Co TN Hugh Cathey witnessed a
deed from Alexander Neil to Andrew Neil. 20 Feb 1815 Hugh witnessed a deed
for John & Esther Reed, Alexander Neil, and Violet Cathey. On 12 Feb 1817
Hugh witnessed Alexander Neil's deed to George Cathey "for great will and
affection." I assume my Hugh died in Bedford County, but his son John shows
up next door in Maury Co TN a little later. My guess is that Hugh Cathey had
more than a distant family relationship to the early Cathey families of
Bedford/Marshall. But how? Regards, Bill Timmons

Kathy,
I have about the same as you, but don't have that John Brandon who married
Mary was the son of the other John Brandon. I do have that the John who
married Elizabeth had a son named William, who married Margaret Cathey,
daughter of James Cathey (d. 1757 in Rowan County), James being the son of
our Unknown Cathey of Ulster.

Hi all,
I'm trying to find out who the parents of Mary (or Maley) Cathey were.
She was born abt. 1716, married John Brandon Jr. 1739 in New Castle
Co., PA. Mary and John are buried in Thyatira Cemetery, Rowan Co.,
NC.
Here's the info I have on her family. Anyone else researching the
Cathey Brandon line/s?
If any of you need a lookup in the book "Carolina Cradle" (Settlement
of the Northwest Carolina Frontier, 1747-1762) by Robert W. Ramsey,
I'll be happy to do. Several Cathey are listed.
1. 1 ? Cathey, born in Ireland. He married unknown.
Children of ? CATHEY were as follows:
+ 2 i John2 Cathey, born in Ulster, Ireland. He married Ann (?).
+ 3 ii James2 Cathey, born 1680/89 in Ulster, Ireland. He married Ann
(?).
+ 4 iii Sarah2 Cathey, born abt. 1700 in Ulster, Ireland. She married
(1) Samuel Givens. She married (2) Robert Allen.
+ 5 iv Elizabeth2 Cathey, born abt. 1691 in Ulster, Ireland. She
married John Brandon Sr.
+ 6 v Mary2 Cathey married John Brandon Jr in 1739
They are buried in Thyatira Cemetery, Rowan Co., NC.
Thanks,
Kathy
