Hi all,
Is anyone on the list aware of any links to the surname CATHERY, to
CATHER. The similarity is obvious, but there seems not to have been any
common history that I could find. I have traced the name CATHERY back to
1693 in Putney UK where the IGI shows that a Desboroue CATHEREY was
christened. CATHERY like most other surnames, it has had its variations over
the years. Mainly the last few letters were altered to CATHEREY, CATHRAY,
CATHRIE ....etc. The Christian name Desboroue has been a common thread in my
family over the generations. I would be keen to hear from anyone else who
has found this Christian name in the course of their research. Desboroue has
also been spelt Desborough, Desbrow and Desbro. I suspect that the Cathery
family were Huguenot's who immigrated to England to evade the religious
persecution going on in France at this time. So CATHEREY may have be an
English adaptation of a French surname.
I would be happy to do lookups for others on the list. I mainly have
reference material for South Australia, however as I live in Victoria, I
could also do some lookups for this state. Likewise I would be happy to
receive any information from list members on the CATHERY name and its
variations that you have/will come across in your research.
Thankyou all in anticipation
Regards
Peter C D Cathery (yes the "D" does stand for Desborough)
