Good luck in your search!
I know that there were a number of Cather (s) in PA in the 1800s.
My grandfather, who grew up in Kansas, told me this story which I take with
a grain of salt because I can't prove any of it...the original name was
Catherlough (not sure about spelling) in Britain, which was shortened to
Cather and his family (not sure what generation) lived in a small
town where there were two Cather families. One family was looked down on
by the other because they were a) drinkers or b) in a business the other
didn't approve of so his family added an ("S") to the name to differentiate
themselves.
Who knows! Best wishes, adam cathers
