Mr. Chestnut,
I would very much like to participate. I did not see how to do so on the
web site you sent (of curse, I am sort of a computer illiterate). Where can
I get more information on this project?
Thank you.

Robert,
That's great!
Here's how to do it. Go back to the web site and on the left-hand side is a
blue area where you will see a link "Request to Join this Group." Click on
that. You will come to a new page. Scroll down to the bottom and you will
see a long button that says "I want to purchase a test to join the
project." Click on that button. You will get a new page that contains a
form to fill out. Fill it out. You want to buy the Y-DNA kit: either the
12, 25, 37, or 67 marker kits. These are the first four kits you see in the
drop-down list; they are at the top. The basic is the 12-marker kit. That
would be the minimum for any Y chromosome test. If you can afford it, you
can get one of the larger marker kits (25-67), or you can upgrade later. We
are asking for at least the 12-marker kit. Don't buy the mtDNA or other
kits for this project. Follow the directions for ordering the kit.
After ordering, it might take a week or two for the kit to arrive. Follow
the directions on the kit and then mail it back with everything that they
require. My kit came with two swabs. You use the first one like a
toothbrush against your inner cheeks for about a minute. Then you push the
plunger and drop the swab into one of the vials and seal it. Then you wait
a designated time period (I forgot what it was) and then use the other
swab. This insures that they get a good sample. You send it all in the
enclosed special envelope. After about a week, they will have received it
and started processing it. You can follow what they do on the web site that
they give you. It takes about a month between when you send it back in and
when they have finished with the results. It will be a learning experience.
I look forward to seeing your results. Let me know if you have any more
questions.
