Hi
My branch of the Cathcarts moved from Tullygarley, nr Ballymena to Scotland sometime
between 1853 (last baptism I have found for their children in Ireland)and 1871 when they
appear on the Census in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
My Great Great Grandfather, John Cathcart (bn 1816), was the son of William Cathcart &
Rebecca nee Bartholemew and this is confirmed on his death certificate in Scotland. His
wife was Jane Eagleson - again something confirmed on his death certificate and on the
baptisms I have found for their children in Ireland. Jane Cathcart's own death
certificate in Scotland gives her father as Robert Eaglesham - a variation probably caused
by the informant being her son-in-law rather than one of her own children.
Your Canadian branch is descended from a John Cathcart and Jane nee Mitchell and, as far
as I am aware, there is no evidence that this John was the son of William & Rebecca.
Both John & Janes were breeding at the same time and on a couple of occasions baptised
children with a few months of each other.
It is likely that our lines are connected in some way but at some point before William
& Rebecca.
Good luck with your researches
Elaine Bye
