Dear Cathcart researchers:
David Cathcart who married Charlotte Sherwin in 1818
in Cincinnati was a schoolmaster there and head of the
lending library. In 1831 he was appointed postmaster
of Dayton, OH.
A postal historian told me that postmaster apinment
were oftenpolitical in nature, especially a lucrative
ost office like Dayton. Details on the appointment of
Dayton's new postmaster in March 1843 would likely be
available in local contemporary newpapers e.g. the
Dayton Miamian and the Dayton Journal.
The Ohio Historical Society's website, www.
ohiohistory.org is searchable by name. Searches for
David Cathcart, David's son Charles W. H. Cathcart,
and Caroline Cathcart's future husband Willard G. Day
reveal the family's activity as educators and members
of the New Jerusalem Church in Cinncinnati, Dayton,
and at the Urbana University in Champaign Co., OH.
Other newpaper articles tell of the rebel plot
instigated by David's son Charles W. H. Cathcart to
stop the civil war, and that Charles had been Ohio
State Superintendent of Education, of Charles arrest
by Gen Burnside and his imprisonment in Fort Chase
near Columbus.
Charles W. H. Cathcart may have gone to Canada after
his arrest. Little is known of him, his wife or his
daughters later years. Chas. daughter Caroline b
1856 in OH probably while Chas was at Urbana
University is on 1860 census with Charles and America
and Joana in Dayton, and in 1870 boarding with a
family in Adams twp, Washington Co, OH.
My family trees reflecting this information are at
