Lloyd Cathcart Smith was married to my grandmother's grandmother. What I know about
Barview Smith (that is what he was called) is that he was born on March 17, 1844 in
Denbigshire Wales. After a career at sea (he was the captain of a schooner in the south
pacific), he purchase some property and settled down in Barview, Tillamook County, Oregon.
He married Elizabeth Terwilliger (Elizabeth was born Elizabeth McNamara in 1834 in
Ireland but that is all I know about her). She had two children by a previous marriage
and one of those children had two children, my grandmother (Elizabeth) and her brother
Louise. When their parents died, they went to live with their grandmother and Barview
Smith. He raised "Granny" and uncle Louise as his own and lived with
"Granny" and her family until his death in 1928. He is burried in the IOOF
Cemetery in Tillamook. His log house still stands on the north jetty of Tillamook Bay.
The house he had built for my grandmother as a wedding pres!
ent is just up the road. That house is still in the family. My aunt and my mother were
both born in that house. We use it as a summer home.
