Dear John
Greetings from a very wet Sunday morning in Oxfordshire, England.
I Hope to speed. Fantastic motto but unfortunately not very apt. I
admit to concentrating on the Doyle side of my husband's family in
Southern Ireland with a surprising amount of success but have come
against a brick wall with the Cathcart's.
My Robert was born in 1848 but I do not know where from. His marriage
was at St. George's Dublin in 8th Dec 1881 by licence address at the
time 17 Forster Ave, North Strand. He was a civil engineer and his
father James Cathcart was a land steward. Robert married the
coastguard's daughter. Amelia Hodges from Clontarf. Hilda Sarah was born
23.02.1887 at Charlemont Terrace, Clontarf.
Of the siblings some went to Germany, Hilda married a Doyle(Roman
Catholic)
But some stayed in the Portadown area of Belfast, making me think that
like most of the Presbyterians they stayed in the North. Latterley Rex
becoming a newscaster and writer living in Coleraine, attending Queens.
Although engineers the family history has it that they were involved
with threshing machines which may have made them unpopular with the
local ag. labs. Hence the journey into Dublin. The Hodges allegedly had
some land in Bray even though the father was a Gloucestershire, England
lad who went to sea.
O.K. so not much help for you. I am a member of S.O.G. in London and
thought I would look up in their little booklet the info they have on
Ireland. M.I.'s spring to mind as they are quite widely transcribed in
the South. However although my little book listed a load at Louth it
didn't include Rathmullan. It does include a Rathmullan at Down
however. Is this an error on their part or is it another Rathmullan I
wonder. Perhaps they need an E. mail. Society of Genealogists. I'm
afraid my geography of Ireland is not good.
Obviously they have Betham's wills but you have gone down that path
already. Also have an index to the Prerogative wills of Ireland
1538-1810.
Louth is also online just Louth Online, perhaps you could be cheeky and
ask what their local paper is and send in a cry for help. If it is only
someone to go around the local cemetery for you.
Best of luck anyrate and if you have a James, son of John born 1820-1830
please let me know. call writer.
Regards
Lin

Subject: [Cathcart] Robert CATHCART.
I am looking for a lead with my research. ROBERT CATHCART 1793-1873 is
my great grandfather. He lived in Drogheda, Co Louth and Rathmullan, Co
Meath, Ireland at least from 1820’s. I have Roberts History to 1820’s in
Drogheda but nothing prior to this time. ROBERT CATHCART’s was a baker
and farmer. He owned a baker shop in Drogheda, Ireland. His farm was in
Rathmullan in the Parish Donore, Co Meath. Unfortunately the Tithe
records for Donore were destroyed. I have no record of his first
marriage but Robert’s second marriage was to Mary Anne Hobson in the
Parish Church, Dundalk co Louth Ireland in 1861. The Probate record
records that Robert Cathcart died domiciled in Ireland. I am not sure
what the significants of this is? Robert’s father was John Cathcart
whose profession is also recorded as a baker. Any help in locating
Roberts movements before the 1820’s.
