Hi John
I would take a chance on Leven, Fife, Scotland. It's on Largo Bay, near
to Buckhaven . Nearest large towns Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy. Golf barmy
countryside. Although not a Scottish lass I believe they would prefer to
be classed as near Edinburgh than Glasgow.
Your site is fascinating and I hoped as one does that my husband's
family would connect.
Robert Cathcart born approx 1848 was married to Amelia Hodges 8.12.1882
at the Parish Church St. George, Dublin, by licence, his address at the
time 17 Foster Ave, North Strand, Dublin. Amelia was a coastguard's
daughter, address Vernon Ave, Clontarf. Robert Hodges and Charles
Cathcart were witnesses.
James Cathcart was his father and his occupation that of a Land Agent.
Although in Dublin believe, Robert a civil engineer, had agricultural
background as family history has it that the family were involved with
threshing machines.
Most of the offspring settled in around Portadown and Rex became a
newscaster and author, living at Coleraine. Heresay has it he attended
Queen's in Belfast. Yet another line of research.
As you can see I haven't progressed very far dealing with the Doyle side
of the problem. Amelia's daughter Hilda marrying a Doyle. A mixed
marriage that seemed to work.
As you can imagine Griffith's has several possible Jamess.
Regards Lin from a very wet and windy Oxfordshire, England

Looking for information on the location of "Lavin." I believe this is
an old town/city south of Glasgow, Scotland. Another lead indicates
that it may have been in County Roscommon, Ireland.
My Cathcart line goes back to brothers James and John born around the
end of the 1600s or early 1700s. Most of the family lived in County
Antrim, N. Ireland before emigrating to the US (my line to South
Carolina).
I have research
(
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cathcart/RSC_letter.html) that
shows these brothers were from Lawin or Lavin or Laven.
Anyone know where this is? I'd appreciate any input!
Thanks,
John Cathcart
