Back in June, Charlie challenged the List with a project of identifying some
of the Cates on the 1830 Bedford County TN Census.
R.D. Cates - 1830-1832 in Bedford County TN
Robert D. Cates moved on to Weakley County TN by the 1840 Census. He served
on several juries in Weakley County beginning with the Oct 1833 session, then
again in Jul 1834 and Oct 1834. The last record I can find for him was in
Aug 1842 when he witnessed a deed. He died before the 1850 Census because
his wife Margaret was a widow with several daughters. He had married
Margaret Carrigan, 13 Sep 1810 in Orange Co NC and was on the 1820 Orange Co
NC Census.
Robert was censused in 1830 in Bedford Co Census on page 52. On page 46 was
Joseph Cates whose wife was a Edney Kirk. I'm wondering if Joseph and Robert
were brothers, based on the following:
Kates Kin, published by Anna Kates Gardner, Rarden, OH, 23 Oct 1981, quoted
Mrs. Harriet Hardaway, St. Louis, MO, as reporting that a genealogical
magazine, name unknown, prior to 1941, ran a column about Joseph Barnard
Cates of Orange County NC, who had sons Charles, Barnard and Stephen.
Charles had eight children: Robert, Rebecca, Mary, Charles, Jr., Martha,
Joseph, Nancy and Reuben.
This information came to me from Dr. Banks Cates. He stated, "The article
obviously erred, in that Joseph Cates, son of Barnard, was confused with the
much older Joseph Cates who had sons Charles and Stephen but not a son
Barnard, who was a contemporary and close associate with Charles and Stephen.
However, there was a ring of truth about the children of Charles to use this
as a guideline. I did this and could not find any reason to refute it."
I'll continue this in Part 2
