This is in reply to "Taffyapple4(a)aol.com" who posted to the list and to
the list members as a whole. Please send me your name and regular mailing
address so that we can compare notes on your Phillip Cates. Some of his
family eventually settled in Raines and Hopkins County, Sulphur Springs,
Texas.
My husband and I have been trying to the past 34 years to break through
the stone wall we have on the Cates of Edgefield District, South Carolina.
This spring my husband has finally entered the information we have on early
Cates/Cate in South Carolina into a genealogy program so that we can keep
track of all of these people. We also have some North Carolina and Virginia
information partly from other sources and partly from Banks Cates research
that he has used to try and sort out these early Cates/Cate. They may not
have all come from Robert the Quaker Shoemaker.
We have Phillip Cates was b. c. 1835 Edgefield District, South Carolina.
His family is on the 1850 census. His father was Sampson, his grandfather
was William, his great grandfather was Robert. Cyndi in Baltimore
(Pathoscafe(a)aol.com) is also from Sampson's line and is on this list.
My husband's line comes from Thomas Cates d. before April, 1794 in
Edgefield District, South Carolina. Robert witnessed the article of
agreement which lists the widow and heirs of Thomas. We do not know how
Robert and Thomas were related. This Robert was not our Thomas's son.
Records we have found don't prove anything as to their relationship.
We think Joseph of Watree, as we have named him, was probably the ancestor
of these men. Joseph of Wateree was receiving 400 acres of land from South
Carolina in 1749/50 on Wateree Creek which later became Fairfield County.
He had a wife and six children at this time. This record is in the
published Council Journals and in the original records at the S. C.
Archives. The time and place were right and the migration path is right.
However, we have not found any other records as to the identity of these six
children. Surely some were sons. Two of them MIGHT have been Robert and
Thomas.
Joseph, son of Thomas, d. before late December, 1812, in Edgefield
District, South Carolina. His wife was Elizabeth _?_.
Children were John, and two daughters who married Artimus Watson and Daniel
Smith. These all eventually migrated to Alabama after 1820 where John
d.c.1826. Some of John's descendents migrated to Lufkin (Kelty's Sawmill),
Angelina County, Texas, about 1880-89 in about three different groups.
We have just recently proved to our satisfaction that our Joseph Cates
is the one who served in Capt. Butler's militia company that was involved in
the Cloud's Creek Massacre of November, 1781. Someone else earlier claimed
this record for a Cate/s man from Lancaster/Spartanburg District, South
Carolina. However, it is very plain when the militia company roster is
compared with the 1790 Edgefield District census that this militia company
was raised from neighbors living east of the "the Ridge" in what is now
Saluda County. We would like to find proof of how our Thomas and Phillip's
ancestor, Robert, were related.
