Hi all, sorry I didn't give enough information; here is what I have been
able to document so far.
David T.(Thomas) Cates b. 26 September 1853 Tennessee (BP is according to
1860,1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1030 census records, Family tradition and
Obituary.) Died Aug 27, 1933 Plains, Yoakum, Texas. (Death certificate and
Obit, Personal knowledge of grandson who is still alive, Family bible)
Born to Melissa Morris and Thomas Cates. They were married Dec 23, 1852,
(Marriage book Murray Co. Georgia) Thomas is found in the 1850 Census in
Murray Co. in the household of Samuel Cate/s. Household consisted of
Samuel b. @1805 bp. Tennessee
Polly b. 1813 bp. North Carolina. (This is a step mother
according to letters exchanged in the 1920's by female siblings of the 1st
family. The original wife/mother of this family was Mahala Horn/e sister of
Riley Horn.
Thomas b. 1835 (not with family in 1860 census. Melissa
remarries in March 1865 in Maryville, Blount, Tenn.
Moves to Nelson, Kentucky
Felix Grundy b. 1838 (died CW married Sarah Toppin 3 children)
Mary K(atherine) b. 1840 (according to 1920's letter married
name is Shipp)
Mahala Clementine b. 1842(married Marion R. Cobb 29 Mar 1868
Linclon Co. Tenn. Have followed this family and children up
to 1930 Census)
Twins:
James M. b 1843 (married Leatha Brown 20 jun 1865
Jackson, AL
Phoebe Ann b. 1843 (marr. Benjiman Reeves: Alabama,
@1865. Have followed this family in the the 20th Century
Marshall Marion b. 1844 (fought CW Nathan Bedford Forest's Cavalry
Captured and release on oath of alligence at Rock Island Ill.
Married M. E. Cobb 25 Sep 1825 Last sure documentation)

Polly Jinkins wife/mother according to family letter 1920's
Mariam Loucinda b. 1848 Georgia (Marr. George Crabtree 3 Oct 1869
Jackson, AL. Have followed this family into the 20th Century)
William R. b. 1853 Georgia (marr. Debby Jane Mathews 16
Jun 1872 Jackson, AL)
Ava Nola b. 1858 Alabama no other information after
1870
Simon Gideon Nero b. 1860 Alabama (marr. Sarah Reynolds Rome, Floyd,
GA 29 Dec 1885 lived Rome area until death in 1945)
Mary b. 1862 no other information after 1870
census.
Samuel probably died before 1880 Census in Cherokee Al. (He is listed here
in 1870)
Polly not listed in 1870 census.
I have followed Melissa and her family from 1860 Census in blount Co. Tenn.
To 1870 Nelson co. Kentucky and 1880 in Bullitt Co. I have been able to
follow her 2nd family into the 20th century also.

David T. age 6
Robert B/H age 2
1865 Melissa Cates marries Thomas H. Robbins in Maryville,Blount Co.
Tenn
1870 Samuel Depot Nelson, Kentucky Family of Thomas Robbins
David and Robert listed as Farmhands
1880 Shepherdsville, Bullitt Co. Kentucky Family of Thomas Robbins
Only 3 children of 2nd marriage listed.
1880 David T. Cates listed in Ellis, Texas with wife, Sallie
(Witherspoon)and daughter Jesse age 2.
I have other family records that confirms the marriage and Kentucky move, so
I know I have the correct Family.
Is this more than you wanted to know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the list of soldiers for his father.
