Mac,
The Y-chromosome testing follows only the male line. Your tests would match
with the Nutt/McNutt line and not the Cate/Cates line. It seems like your
best bet would be to find a female Cate/Cates from Mary's line and a McNutt
female from your line and see if Y'all can match mtDNA.
Maybe Look through this site's FAQ and their testing descriptions and see if
anything works.

Hope this helps!

My name is Norman (Mac) McNutt. My G.G.Grandmother was Mary Kate's. She
married Robert McNutt. They were both from Orange County, NC. In doing a
lot
of research on my Grandparents we have found what we believe has been our
stumbling block. My G.G.grandparents were we think, Robert & Mary (Cates)
Nutt.
There were a bunch of them on O,C,NC. Everything we have keeps bringing
this
back to them. If this is true, Would I be able to take the DNA test from my
G.G.Grandmothers side from the Cates? Please let me know.
Thank You
Mac McNutt
