Hi all,
As most of you are aware, we have an ongoing DNA project for our surname at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Cates%20DNA/default.aspx
Many of you have tested and now know which genetic group your DNA falls into (and whether
or not you match the?signers of SC!)? Many of us have "met" new cousins and been
able to make new break-throughs in tracing our family lines. (Click on the Y-results link
to see who matches who...)
FamilyTreeDNA.com, the company we use for testing, is offering a 50% discount in testing
until the 24th of June.? This is for NEW testers and includes a 37-marker Y-line (your
father's father's father's line) AND a mitochondrial test (your mother's
mother's mother's line).? Since only males carry the Y chromosome, this test is
only for men!
**If you have never tested, now is a perfect opportunity!
**If you are female, find yourself a male relative carrying the?Cates/Cate/Kates (any
spelling) surname, and test him. (Father's Day Gift, anyone?)
**If you only have one person tested from your genetic line, it's a good time to test
another--this can help you define/refine relationships and even determine your deep
ancestor's actual DNA profile (this is called "triangulation").?
**If you have? a line that NEEDS further testing, but you don't have a viable
candidate yet, you can still buy a test kit at this 1/2-price and hold it till you find a
candidate!? Write to our list and I'm sure folks will try to help you find someone
from your line to test...
**Sale or not, anyone can contribute to the "general fund".? Donations here can
be open for any future tester, or dedicated to a particular line.? They can also be left
"in memory" of or "in appreciation of" an individual or group. ?I do
this myself when I am having trouble finding a descendant of a particular line to test,
ie, "Donation toward test of a proven descendant of?Sampson Cates 1803-1854" or
"apply donation to any?Cates?whose documentable ancestors are from the Edgefield
District of SC."
Please write if you have questions!?? This sale is only until the 24th and will likely not
be repeated until next year.
Let the rumpus begin!
