Oh, I forgot, I mailed your posting to two of my "older" cousin to see if
anything rings a bell with them.

Subject: [CATES] Re: CATES
My Cates were in Illinois. Noah Cates, sons, John R. and Wesley
Cates/Kates,
plus a few others. For years I only knew Wesley's name, and it
was
originally believed that Wesley was one of a "bunch" of kids. His
parents, father who
had married a Cherokee Indian, lived in a covered wagon that
traveled,
never
settling. The father had a terrible temper, and flicked the oxen as
well
as
the kids with a bull whip and as soon as possible they took off, with
only
three
ever meeting again. I've been able to trace back further and now
it looks
as
though Noah, Wesley's father, lived in Alton, Illinois, in a
permanent
residence, so the one with the bull whip might have been Noah's father.
Unless....
ha! Wesley was born about 1862, his father, Noah about 1835. Noah
was
married to Mary Posey (Wesley's mother), then Hulda Sparks. Wesley was
married
to
Laura Belle Perry Cates (she was first married to Wesley's
brother, John).
Doubt if there are any tie-in to the Cates I've been reading about, but
thought I'd send my info.
