Cyndi,
My family history documented only goes back to Elijah B. Cates born in
1822. He was born in Burke County, Georgia. Dan Cates of Texas believes he is
related to me and the connection goes back to John Cates who came from South
Carolina. John is thought to be the son of Thomas Sr. of Clouds Creek,
Edgefield Dist. SC. Dan's line is John's brother Joseph also son Of Thomas Sr.
The DNA should prove this connection.

Hi Billy,
Thanks for responding--cousin? Can you fill me in on the link between your
Elijah and John? My own Cates line was in Edgefield also, and about the
same time:
William Cates 1780-1831 m. Mary, children Wiley and Sampson.
Sampson Cates 1803-1854 m. Leannah/Leona
Wiley Cates 1832-1880 m. Nancy Sawyer...
All these guys were from Edgefield District, SC. Wiley moved on to Franklin
Co, TX (some of his brothers moved to Rains and Hopkins Co). Though I don't
show an Elijah, I lost a lot of data in a 'puter crash a while back and
haven't worked on this line for a bit. Starting the DNA project was sort of a
way of forcing myself to get back to it...
Can you tell me more about John and his offspring? I have yet to find a
Cates cousin to test, but I suspect we'd find a match if I could! I have
plugged your Elijah into my Cates database, but if you can help fill in the
blanks--or blank--between your Elijah and the John & Thomas that Dan has, I'd
appreciate it! Was Elijah a son of John? Do you have any dates on John or Thomas?
Is anyone else on the list connected to (your) John or (my) William of early
Edgefield District??? I'd love to hear more!
thanks for writing!
