Cyndi, Liz, and Cate/Cates List Members,
I am Dan Cates who corresponded with Cyndi some years ago about our mutual
lineage. I sent Cyndi a package by US mail (as I did Billy in the last
couple of weeks) on our Edgefield connection. For some reason I never
received a reply from Cyndi. Maybe I had the wrong snail mail address?
Whether you ever got the package of information, I have no way of knowing.
At least the package never came back to me as undeliverable. I concluded
you did not agree with my research and/or chose not to respond to it or just
never got around to answering. I did not bother you further. That is
history!
Now to the present. I believe your William to be a son of Robert, believed
brother of my Thomas Sr. Why you ask? There was an "ARTICLE OF AGREEMENT
BETWEEN THE CATES" written in April 1794 that lists the children of the
deceased Thomas Cates Sr. Those listed were Joseph (my ancestor) John ( I
believe Billy's ancestor), Hulda/Huldah, Kesiah/Keziah, and Thomas Jr. One
of the two witnesses was Robert Cates. All parties signed with an "X". With
that information one can place who belongs to who on the Edgefield census of
1790, 1800, and 1810 which I am sure you are familiar with. Nowhere is it
specifically written Robert and Thomas were brothers but their ages lead to
that logical conclusion. Thus Robert is the logical father of your William.
The John on the 1810 and 1820 census is my John, the son of Joseph. So what
happened to John the son of Thomas Sir.? I believe he is the same John who
was the original settler of Cates of Burke Co. that settled there prior to
1790 and fathered James, Joseph, and Thomas. Burke Co. is only some 60 miles
from Edgefield District which is a reasonable distant for him to return in
1794 for an estate settlement.
At the risk of further convoluting our ancestry, I believe our Robert,
Thomas, and Sallie were children of old Joseph of Wateree Creek of the
Wateree River in old Craven Co., SC. You are probably aware that Joseph b.
ca. 1700-1710 received a 400 acre land grant there in 1749/50. In the SC
Council Journal of 1749/50 he declared he had a wife and six children. No
ages or gender was given for the children. The location of that grant was
some 50 miles to the east of Clouds Creek. I located the deed where he sold
that property in 1766. He signed with his mark. I believe Joseph and by then
his grown children migrated to then Berkeley Co, later 96 District and by
1785 Edgefield District SC. I can find no record of them there prior to 1780
but believe they were there. My Joseph of ca. 1760 served in the
Revolutionary War from Edgefield District in 1781-2.
Now, no one else to my knowledge has claimed to be a descendant of Joseph
of Wateree Creek. He needs some heirs and with six children he deserves
them. Here we are! Hopefully our DNA will help clear that up.
For what it is worth I also believe old Joseph of Wateree Creek
previously had lived on the Flat River, Orange Co. NC near his believed
brother John. That information courtesy of Dr. Banks Cates. I also believe
there were two sets of Cates brothers in Orange Co., one set(Robert and
Thomas on Cane/Cain CK.) literate; the other (John,& Joseph on the Flat
River & Ben on the nearby Eno River) were illiterate. A fact my own research
has proven out. DNA should prove interesting there also.
I have compiled a history of the children of Cyndi's Robert as well as my
Thomas Sr. and Billy's John. I hope to combine them all together as
descendants of old Wateree Joseph. This is not a commercial venture. Just a
hobby that will be contributed to libraries of interest. But first I want to
get it right. Again DNA I hope is the answer.
Now as concerns Liz Worden's inquiry. Her Cates lineage going backwards in
time seems to be Paralee Lora, William(Billy), Wiley Robert, Sampson,
William, Robert, and most likely Joseph of Wateree Creek. The information
on Paralee was given to me by Pat Hamilton, a granddaughter of
William(Billy) who lives in Mt. Vernon.
I am receptive to any information anyone is willing to give on any of these
families and am ready to reciprocate. However, I am barely computer literate
and am somewhat limited in my ability in sending out information by email. I
am also a two fingered typist.
I hope this is helpful to my Edgefield cousins.

Cyndi,
My family history documented only goes back to Elijah B. Cates born in
1822. He was born in Burke County, Georgia. Dan Cates of Texas believes
he is
related to me and the connection goes back to John Cates who came from
South
Carolina. John is thought to be the son of Thomas Sr. of Clouds Creek,
Edgefield Dist. SC. Dan's line is John's brother Joseph also son Of Thomas
Sr.
The DNA should prove this connection.

Hi Billy,
Thanks for responding--cousin? Can you fill me in on the link between your
Elijah and John? My own Cates line was in Edgefield also, and about the
same time:
William Cates 1780-1831 m. Mary, children Wiley and Sampson.
Sampson Cates 1803-1854 m. Leannah/Leona
Wiley Cates 1832-1880 m. Nancy Sawyer...
All these guys were from Edgefield District, SC. Wiley moved on to
Franklin
Co, TX (some of his brothers moved to Rains and Hopkins Co). Though I
don't
show an Elijah, I lost a lot of data in a 'puter crash a while back and
haven't worked on this line for a bit. Starting the DNA project was sort
of a
way of forcing myself to get back to it...
Can you tell me more about John and his offspring? I have yet to find a
Cates cousin to test, but I suspect we'd find a match if I could! I have
plugged your Elijah into my Cates database, but if you can help fill in the
blanks--or blank--between your Elijah and the John & Thomas that Dan has,
I'd
appreciate it! Was Elijah a son of John? Do you have any dates on John or
Thomas?
Is anyone else on the list connected to (your) John or (my) William of
early
Edgefield District??? I'd love to hear more!
thanks for writing!
