Don,
My name is Maureen Hyde and I am very interested it the answer to your
question if your test will be able to tell you if you have Indian blood.
I am related to Temperance Cates and she is supposed to be a full blood
Cherokee Indian. The problem is I can't find her on any rolls and I don't think a
DNA test would work in my case.
Temperance Cates b. Jan. 10, 1817 in Franklin Co. TN. m. James Brixey in abt.
1829. Her parents were Ephraim Estridge Cates and Rebecca Lindsey.
I would welcome any information on Temperance and the answer to Don's
question.
Thanks, Maureen Hyde

Just some info on JOSHUA CATES: It is reported is reported that Joshua
Cates was an early millowner on the Big Whipperwill. He is shown in
the Logan Co., KY 1795 Tax List as having 57 acres in the Whipperwill

Capt. Joshua Cates was in the Battle of King's Mountain, under Shelby;
three days after that battle, he came with his good friend, Daniel

say that he (Cates) and Maj. William Stewart were pioneers of South
Kentucky. Capt. Cates became one of the largest land holders in the
State of Kentucky, owning tracts in Christian, Logan, Todd, and other
counties. He had several encounters with Indians, and many narrow

Hyla,
OK, I'll keep an eye out. But, the goal of the study is to identify the
lines and designate a contact for those lines. Ideally, you'll be able to
just contact the person for your line and get the info that is available.

Bruce,
My name is Hyla Davidson, I had a G-grandmother by the name of Apsley Cates. She married William H. Cox, in Cannon Co., Tenn.. I don't have anyone to do the DNA. My grandmother was her dau., and my father was her grandson. Is there anyway that I can keep track of how you are doing with this. I can't find her parents.
Hyla Gene (Jones) Davidson
According to the Offices of Scottish Heraldry, The Name Cate is part of the
Clan Keith. In fact, it is considered a variation of the spelling. Go
figure!
Interestingly, The DNA Evidence would support that, my line at least, was
connected to the Clan Kincaid. These Clans WERE NOT allies.
Food for thought...
This is just some of the information that DNA research can provide that
you're just not going to get by conventional research.
