Jere,
You're good through Matthias. I've found no documentation connecting Robert
to Richard except dubious internet postings. No real documentation though.
Regards, Bruce

Whoops. I have William Abraham Cates in my tree as the father of Robert who
was the father of Richard Mathias Cates who was the father of Richard who
was the father of John Cates (born 1801). I have him as the father of
Rchard Cates who married Nancy Chasteen. I know Richard and Nancy are my
ancestors because I have Nancy's death certificate. Her son Woodson was my
great grandfather. Guess I better go back to the drawing boards.
Jere Cates Gainey, your cuz!

One of the impacts of DNA in the area of genealogical research is to
prove one cannot trust postings on the internet. DNA can prove who
you're NOT related to. I strongly suggest that if information
concerning your family lines doesn't come with at least a reference to
the documents that support it, that you put it on the shelf until you
can find the documents that do support it.
A sad example which many folks have fallen for is the claim of
relationship to William Abraham Cate and his twin sons. NO ONE has been
able to find any documentation that William Abraham ever existed.
Further, there is scant and inconclusive evidence of his alleged sons:
Robert and Richard. Though some people will swear it to be true, where
is any documentation? Any? The records section in both Colyton and
Devonshire will tell you that no such records exist.
Please consider taking the approach that if it isn't properly
documented, it isn't so! I know a lot of folks will not like this post
but please remember that we're looking for the truth.
Regards,
Bruce A. Cates
