Hi Christine,
I sincerely hope that no one is saying all Cate/Cates are anything. To
address your questions: the Y-DNA only follows the male line directly from
father to son. The Mt or mitochondrial DNA follows only the female line from
mother to daughter. I had just put a little blurb on the Cates cousin site
trying to remind folks that "family" is a much broader term than who can be
proven to be connected by DNA.
The female lines are very important to documenting relationships and there
are several members in the current Cates DNA study who have entered their
mitochondrial DNA results. We need many, many more to help document
relationships. There are a number of different circumstances in which your
blood relatives will have neither your DNA nor your name. Paternal cousins
are a prime example of this but they are nonetheless your cousins.
You will find that throughout history particularly "ancient history"
families represented clans of people who simply live together. Some were
related by blood somewhere not. As time progressed the dominant bloodlines
in newsgroups might change several times. Even the modern history there is a
long-standing tradition both in Celtic culture and in the culture of early
America to take in individuals who were orphaned, distant family members, or
silly folks who are in need.
Like every other family name you will find a great number of bloodlines
which originate from all over the world and from every race color creed and
national origin on the planet. This is particularly true with Americans. To
be a Cates does not mean that you are a member of the dominant bloodlines
currently illustrated the DNA study. There are countless other numbers of
bloodlines which have not yet been discovered as far as the study is
concerned and/or peoples whose name fits or is a derivative of the family
name
The more maternal DNA lines we can get in the study the easier it's going to
be too scientifically layout the connections to the male bloodlines. If you
have a female Cates bloodline, I would urge you to join the study.
Your Cousin,
Bruce

Call me young and nieve, but I've a question.
I know that many types of DNA testing follows the Y chromosome. However, let
s say a particular male member of the Cates family has only daughters. Those
daughters do not "end" the Cates line on that branch. In matters of blood,
it seems rather silly to chop out all female members of a tree. Yes it's
easier to follow names, but a name is just that, a name. Blood can't be
changed. I found a while back a branch of Cates that got their name by
adopting the name. There was no blood link at all. Therefore, the name was
just a name, not a blood link, not to be added to the original Cates family
tree.
In this particular argument, I would say what happened was the original
Cates fed back to England / Scotland / etc. but when the Cates came
State-side, a native branch entered into the family.
Again, just offering my opinion, not claiming any special know-how. Just don
t see the point in arguing.
~Christine~

Kim,
Before I forget, I only blog about my own/husband's family tree. I don't
blog about the "Cates" name in general. This is about our own
genetics/ancestry. If you have tested genetically, and you don't mind, I'd
be interested in knowing what your haplogroup is, and have you been able to
narrow down to a specific tribe?

My
