Just to throw in my 2 cents.
I've got a family tree that I'm working on confirming. Goes back a decent
ways. But descendants come from England and France mostly. My dad swears
that there is also a branch in Scotland that even has the Scottish shield. I
ve not confirmed the Scottish portion, but so far everything is proving the
English/France. Once I have proven as much as I can I shall be putting the
tree up on the web for all to see. I will admit, I have not done the DNA
testing.

I guess this is where we have to look past our surnames and test genetically
The CATES line my husband comes from is of course European. Genetics ruled
out Native American. There is no other tests to take. He's European both
paternally/maternally.
Have you tested YOUR Cates family and found the Native American genetics?
Also, WHERE did you get the Cates name? MANY surnames can come about through
adoption, census mistakes, and even through the mother. You would be
surprised how many people test their genes and realize that they do NOT
share the same genetics as their ancestors (scandals/unwed mother's) etc.
This is why I firmly believe in testing genetically/along with oral history
to build one's family tree.
Since I've ruled out Native American ancestry, I'm now looking to see if our
Cates family is Scottish/Irish, and to find missing relatives to build on
the "very empty" family tree.
PS) How exciting for you to have Native American ancestry with the Cates
name. I'm assuming this is paternally?

Did you have the specific test CHECKING for NATIVE DNA? Anyway, If you are
going to blog about the CATES line at least put a disclaimer that there IS a
line of CATES family that IS INDIAN, I know my family and the tribe would
appreciate it.> > Sincerely,> > Kim > > > -----Original
